  2. 2. Protein structure dynamics and interplay : by single-particle electron microscopy

    Author : Hans Elmlund; Hans Hebert; José Maria Carazo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biophysics; biochemistry; molecular; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a method capable of obtaining information about the structural organization and dynamics of large macromolecular assemblies. In the late nineties, the method was suggested to have the potential of generating “atomic resolution” reconstructions of particles above a certain mass. READ MORE

  3. 3. Essays on Epistemology and Evolutionary Game Theory

    Author : Elias Tsakas; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Common knowledge; communication; consensus; betting; primitive propositions; negative introspection; information partition; projection; learning.;

    Abstract : This thesis has two parts, one consisting of three independent papers in epistemology (Chapters 1-3) and another one consisting of a single paper in evolutionary game theory (Chapter 4): (1) “Knowing who speaks when: A note on communication, common knowledge and consensus” (together with Mark Voorneveld) We study a model of pairwise communication in a finite population of Bayesian agents. We show that, if the individuals update only according to the signal they actually hear, and they do not take into account all the hypothetical signals they could have received, a consensus is not necessarily reached. 4. 4. Inference of Hierarchical Structure in Complex Systems

    Author : Olof Görnerup; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Protein evolution; Substitution groups; Modularity; Hierarchical dynamics; RNA world; Genetic code; Aggregation; Primordial evolution; Molecular evolution; Model reduction; Self-organization; Lumping; Emergence; Coarse graining;

    Abstract : Hierarchical organization is a central property of complex systems. It is even argued that a system is required to be hierarchical in order to evolve complexity within reasonable time. A hierarchy of a system is defined as the set of self-contained levels at which the system operates and can be described on. READ MORE

  5. 5. Understanding structure and function of membrane protein transporters

    Author : Anna-Karin Lundbäck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Membrane protein transporters are important proteins in the cell, as they maintain different solutes and metabolites at a stable concentration. Numerous diseases can be linked to malfunctioning transporters, which makes them interesting pharmaceutical targets. READ MORE
