  1. 1. Architectural prototypes : modes of design development and architectural practice

    Author : Jonas Runberger; Katja Grillner; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; architecture theory; design theory; prototype; performance; effect; affect; architectural design project; parametric model; design solution space; fabrication; production; industrial process; research by design; digital practice; projective practice; generative components; krets; parcel; splinegraft; urbantoys v.2; informed modularity; Architecture; Arkitektur;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis is design driven, partly based on case studies in the form of experimental design projects developed mainly within the research and design collective Krets. It constitutes the first half of a PhD project that studies new technologies and techniques within design processes and the production of architecture, especially in relation to collaborative models. 2. 2. Intra-Representational Practice : An Inquiry into the Conditions for the Possibility of Interdisciplinary Imaginative Collaborative Architectural Modeling in Sustainable Urban Design

    Author : Pehr-Mikael Sällström; Daniel Koch; Helene Frichot; Gunilla Almström Persson; Isabelle Doucet; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Practice epistemology; Architecture; Urban design; Collaborative modeling; Interdisciplinary imagination; Communicative interaction; Representation; Distributed cognition; Intermodal communication; Trans-discourse.; Praktisk kunskap; Arkitektur; Stadsbyggnad; Kollaborativ modellering; Interdisciplinär föreställning; Kommunikativ interaktion; Representation; Distribuerad kognition; Intermodal kommunikation; Trans-diskurs; Arkitektonisk gestaltning; Architectural Design;

    Abstract : A consequence of the concern for a sustainable future is that the number of experts needed to be included in the imaginative stage of architectural modeling is rising. This motivates a better understanding of the conditions for the possibility of transgressive collaborative plural imagination in architectural modeling. READ MORE

  3. 3. Situated Freedom : Exploring the Aesthetic Practice of Rem Koolhaas/OMA

    Author : Katja Hogenboom; Helena Mattsson; Sven-Olov Wallenstein; Helene Frichot; Robert Somol; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Situated Freedom; Assemblage; Fabulation; Any-Space-Whatever; Irrational Cut; Time-Image; Montrage; Non-Object; Theatre of Variation; Power of the False; Politics of Aesthetics; Messy Method; Aesthetic Practice; Rem Koolhaas; OMA; China Central Television Headquarters; Seattle Central Library; Villa dall’Ava; Maison à Bordeaux.; Arkitekturens historia och teori; History and Theory of Architecture;

    Abstract : The thesis advocates that architecture can, as an operative medium, situate freedom. Following the work of Michel Foucault, the thesis develops an argument for an emancipatory endeavor, termed “situated freedom in architecture. READ MORE

  4. 4. Program Matters : From Drawing to Code

    Author : Pablo Miranda Carranza; Katja Grillner; Daniel Koch; Charlie Gulström Hughes; Molly Wright Steenson; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; program; algorithm; code; drawing; geometry; notation; score; literacy; writing systems; diagram; formalism; sequence; cybernetics; materiality; research programme; archeological; archive; discourse analysis; practice-based; artefact; bricolage; Architecture; Arkitektur;

    Abstract : Whether on paper, on site or mediating between both, means for reading and writing geometry have been central to architecture: the use of compasses and rulers, strings, pins, stakes or plumb-lines enabled the analysis and reproduction of congruent figures on different surfaces since antiquity, and from the renaissance onwards, the consistent planar representation of three-dimensional shapes by means of projective geometry. Tacitly through practice, or explicitly encoded in classical geometry, the operational syntaxes of drawing instruments, real or imaginary, have determined the geometric literacies regulating the production and instruction of architecture. 5. 5. Early Stage Architectural Design Practice Perspectives on Life Cycle Building Performance Assessment

    Author : Toivo Säwén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Early design stages; Participatory software development; Ethnographic interview; Literature review; Life cycle assessment; Building performance; Architecture;

    Abstract : Architectural practitioners can avoid negative social and environmental impacts of new construction by making decisions supported by impact quantification during design processes. However, most software tools developed for such quantification see little use in practice, especially in early design stages when decisions have the greatest influence. READ MORE
