1. Experimental inhibition of proliferative retinopathy
Abstract : Retinal ischemic diseases like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic retinopathy (DRP) and retinal vein occlusion, with preretinal neovascularization (angiogenesis) that may lead to vitreous hemorrhages and retinal detachment with subsequent vision loss and blindness is a global health problem. By analyzing the potential role of molecules acting at different levels of the angiogenic cascade the presented studies aimed to widen our understanding of retinal ischemic diseases on a molecular, cellular and morphologic level. 2. Antigen interaction with B cells in two proliferative disorders : CLL and MGUS
Abstract : The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to elucidate B cell interaction with antigen in the two B cell proliferative disorders chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). In the first part we investigated the antigen specificity of CLL cells and characterized Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed CLL cell lines with regard to phenotype and genotype. READ MORE

3. p63 and epithelial homeostasis : studies of p63 under normal, hyper-proliferative and malignant conditions
Abstract : Background: The p63 gene is a member of the p53 transcription factor family and can produce six different proteins using two promoters and differential splicing. Expression of p63 is required for proper formation of epithelial tissues. READ MORE

4. Proliferative and protective effects of the GH/IGF-I axis on cardiomyocytes and neural progenitor cells
Abstract : Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of mortality in the Western world and the majority of cardiovascular deaths are caused by coronary artery disease or cerebrovascular disease. Growth hormone (GH) is a growth-promoting hormone synthesized by the pituitary. READ MORE

5. On the immune response in porcine enteric diseases : with special reference to swine dysentery, proliferative enteropathy and PMWS
Abstract : Enteric infectious diseases are a common problem worldwide among pigs. It is important to gain a better knowledge about the pathogeneses of the diseases and the local immune response, in which the intestine has a very important role. READ MORE
