  1. 1. Macrolide Antibiotics in Bacterial Protein Synthesis

    Author : Martin Lovmar; Måns Ehrenberg; Tanel Tenson; Peter B. Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; protein synthesis; macrolides; resistance; initiation of translation; non-competitive inhibitors; kinetics; translation accuracy; proof-reading; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Macrolides are a large group of clinically relevant antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the large ribosomal subunit in the peptide exit tunnel, close to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC). We have shown that the peptide length of the resulting peptidyl-tRNA drop-off products is proportional to the distance between the PTC and the respective macrolide in the tunnel. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on Translation Initiation and trans-Translation

    Author : Serhiy Surkov; Leif Isaksson; Udo Bläsi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; E. coli; ribosome; IF1; tmRNA; trans-translaton; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract :  Translation initiation factor 1 (IF1) is an essential bacterial protein, without any clearly defined function in translation initiation. Same point mutants in this protein exhibit cold-sensitivity. In addition, a sequence specific increase in test protein expression has been observed for these mutants. READ MORE

  3. 3. Contract-theoretic analyses of consultants and trade unions

    Author : Per Sonnerby; Handelshögskolan i Stockholm; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Why can junior management consultants bill four-digit dollar amounts a day for working with corporations and industries where they have no experience? Why do blue-collar workers organise in industry-specific unions involved in collective wage bargaining, while white-collars organise according to educational or professional background, offering résumé proof-reading, or don’t unionise at all? The doctoral thesis Contract-Theoretic Analyses of Consultants and Trade Unions consists of three self-containing essays in Economics of Organisation. What Do Consultants Do? asks why firms pay large fees to outsiders in core activities like management. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mitochondrial dysfunction in ageing and degenerative disease

    Author : Anna Wredenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells contains a dynamic network of double-membraned organelles, called mitochondria, which perform the process of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) that provides cellular energy in the form of ATP. The respiratory chain creates an electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives ATP synthesis by the ATP synthase. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mitochondrial DNA mutations : brain developmental and ageing consequences, and possible treatments

    Author : Jaime M Ross; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Ageing is a complex process that involves cellular senescence, a gradual loss of tissue homeostasis, and decline in organ function. Abundant evidence implicates mitochondria in ageing suggesting: (i) accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage, (ii) progressive respiratory chain dysfunction, and (iii) increased reactive oxygen species production.
