  1. 16. Prostaglandins and Isoprostanes in Relation to Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis : Role of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Johanna Helmersson; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Tommy Cederholm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; prostaglandin F2α; F2-isoprostane; interleukin-6; C-reactive protein; serum amyloid A; tocopherols; cardiovascular risk factors; variation; inflammation; oxidative stress; human; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Abstract : Inflammation and oxidative stress may be involved in atherogenesis. This thesis describes clinical studies of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), an inflammatory mediator, and the isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α, a reliable indicator of oxidative stress, and cytokine-related inflammatory mediators and indicators in healthy subjects and in a population-based cohort of Swedish men. 3. 18. Studies of cytokine mediated regulation of central nervous functions : role of prostaglandins

    Author : Monica Ek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : interleukin-1; prostaglandin E2; central nervous system; HPA axis; fever; vagus nerve;

    Abstract : The communication between the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS) results in an array of centrally regulated illness responses, including fever and increased hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. The mechanisms by which the immune system signals the brain across the blood-brain barrier have not been completely elucidated, but proinflammatory cytokines, like interleukin-1 (IL-1), are believed to act as important mediators. 5. 20. Tumor progression in the ovary and colon. The interaction of Wnt-signaling, transcription and formation of prostaglandins

    Author : Katarina Rask; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : CCAAT Enhancer Binding Proteins C EBPs ; Wingless Wnt Wnt signaling pathway; Cyclooxygenases COXs ; colorectal cancer CRC ; epithelial ovarian cancer EOC ;

    Abstract : Alterations in cell-cell adhesion, intracellular signaling and transcriptional regulation are common events during transformation of cells to the malignant phenotype. Different cellular defense mechanisms, e.g. inflammatory responses, mediated by prostaglandins, have also been associated with tumor development. READ MORE
