  1. 6. Localized Prostate Cancer : Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial

    Author : Anna Bill-Axelson; Lars Holmberg; Bo Johan Norlén; Peter Wiklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; prostate cancer; localized; randomized; biopsies; interviews; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to• explore whether radical prostatectomy is beneficial compared with watchful waiting in survival and disease progression• find possible effect modifiers• evaluate a protocol of multiple biopsies and investigate if men with previous benign prostate biopsies are a group at risk for later prostate cancer• inquire into patients’ and clinicians’ experiences of randomization in order to find out what made this study possible to conduct, and thereby contribute to improve randomization in the futureThe background material was a large randomized clinical trial, the Scandinavian Prostatic Cancer Group Study Number 4, or SPCG-4, which was open for inclusion from February 1989 through December 1999. It comprised 695 men in Sweden, Finland and Iceland who had localized prostate cancer and were randomized to either radical prostatectomy or watchful waiting. READ MORE

  2. 7. Inflammation and prostate carcinogenesis : influence of immune characteristics and early-adulthood exposure to inflammatory conditions on prostate cancer risk

    Author : Henrik Ugge; Katja Fall; Sabina Davidsson; Jessica Carlsson; Ove Andrén; Lars Henningsohn; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; inflammation; Cutibacterium acnes; acne; appendicitis; cytokines; circulating; inflammation marker; IL6; CXCL8;

    Abstract : Chronic inflammation has been implicated in the development of several types of cancer, and evidence from observational and animal studies suggests that it may play a role also in prostate carcinogenesis. Recent observations have brought Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) forward as a possible causative agent in pro-oncogenic prostatic inflammation. READ MORE

  3. 8. Some Characteristics of Human Prostasomes and Their Relationship to Prostate Cancer

    Author : Göran Ronquist; Anders Larsson; Lena Carlsson; Alicia Llorente; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostasomes; prostate; prostate cancer; clusterin; antibodies; metastasis; exosomes; PC-3 cells; DNA vehicles; gene therapy; immunoblotting; mass spectrometry; agarose gel electrophoresis; vertebral metastasis.; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Background: The secretory epithelial cells of the prostate gland use sophisticated vehicles named prostasomes to relay important information to sperm cells in semen. This prostasome-forming and secretory ability of the epithelial cells is also preserved in poorly differentiated prostate cancer cells. READ MORE

  4. 9. Early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer : observational studies in the National Prostate Cancer Register of Sweden and the Västerbotten Intervention Project

    Author : Benny Holmström; Pär Stattin; Håkan Jonsson; Mattias Johansson; Gunnar Aus; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; prostate-specific antigen; single nucleotide polymorphism; Urology and andrology; Urologi och andrologi; Urology; kirurgi; särskilt urologi;

    Abstract : Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing has caused a steep increase in the incidence of prostate cancer, especially the incidence of localised low risk disease. In order to decrease the overdiagnosis accompanied by PSA testing, analysis of inherited genetic variants have been suggested as potential tools for clinical assessment of disease risk. READ MORE

  5. 10. STAT3 in Prostate Cancer

    Author : Nicholas Don-Doncow; Malmö Urologisk cancerforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prostate cancer; STAT3; biomarker; Immunohistochemestry; Drug Resistance;

    Abstract : Prostate cancer is the second most common diagnosed cancer among men. Currently there are no reliablebiomarkers to distinguish between indolent and aggressive disease. When men progress to advanced stages of the disease treatment options are limited and resistance to treatments available today is a growing problem. READ MORE
