  1. 6. Biological aspects of synovial fluid mediated aseptic prosthesis loosening

    Author : Martin Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Aseptic loosening; synovial fluid; osteoblasts; bone resorption; IGF;

    Abstract : Aseptic prosthesis loosening is the most common reason for late failure of total hip arthroplasties. Resorption of the peri-prosthetic bone, resulting in a loose prosthesis is characteristic for aseptic loosening. READ MORE

  2. 7. Mechanisms of mechanically induced Osteoclastogenesis : in a novel in vitro model for bone implant loosening

    Author : Cornelia Bratengeier; Anna Fahlgren; Per Aspenberg; Mikael Sigvardsson; Oran Kennedy; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Total joint arthroplasty is the primary intervention in the treatment of end-stage osteoarthritis. Despite the high success rate, in some patients, the replacement will fail during their lifetime requiring a revision of the implant. These revisions are strenuous for the patient and costly for health care. READ MORE

  3. 8. Heterotopic Ossification : Clinical and Experimental Studies on Risk Factors, Etiology and Inhibition by Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

    Author : Per-Erik Persson; Olle Nilsson; Per Aspenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Heterotopic ossification; Hip prosthesis; NSAIDs; Prophylaxis; Prosthesis loosening; Reoperation; Animal model; Bone formation; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, occurrence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) was studied. Preventive effects and complications with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed. Experimental investigations on bone formation were employed to gain insight to the mechanism of NSAIDs action on bone.(I). READ MORE

  4. 9. Hip revisions with impacted morselized allograft bone and cement. Patient outcome, prosthetic fixation and risks

    Author : Ewald Ornstein; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiostereometry; NHP; patient outcome; cement; allograft; morselized; impacted; bone transplantation; hip; Arthroplasty; revision; complications; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : 144 consecutive hip revisions performed with morselized allograft bone and cement were followed up to 5 years after surgery. In 49 hips patient outcome was evaluated with the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) questionnaire and Charnley hip scores in 47 hips prosthetic fixation was evaluated with radiostereometry (RSA)and in all 144 hips risks and complications were recorded using a prspective protocol. 5. 10. Fixation and load in total knee arthroplasty : a clinical, radiographic, radiostereometric and gait study

    Author : Maria B Hilding; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : total knee arthroplasty; tibial component loosening; radiostereometric analysis RSA ; alignment; gait analysis; joint loading; flexionmoments; Nottingham Health Profile.;

    Abstract : The treatment of severe gonarthrosis by total knee arthroplasty is generally successful, but tibial component loosening remains a problem. The aim in the present work was to investigate if any association between loading and insufficient tibial component fixation could be found, and if the fixation was affected by the tibial component design differences.
