16. To Fold or To Fibrillate? Serendipity in Stability Studies
Abstract : Proteins are complex structures and years of research have been spent on attempts to understand their complexity. The non-covalent interactions involved in protein folding are: hydrophobic effect, electrostatic interactions, van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. READ MORE

17. Polymorphic protein aggregation in tauopathies
Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease(s) comprises one of the most common and costly neurodegenerative diseases. With a larger population and an increasing life expectancy, amyloid diseases (with age as one of the most prominent risk factors) will generate an even larger burden on healthcare. READ MORE

18. Self-assembly of amyloid-β peptides in the presence of metal ions and interacting molecules – a detour of amyloid building blocks
Abstract : Misfolding of proteins into amyloid structures is implicated as a pathological feature in several neurodegenerative diseases and the molecular causes are still unclear. One typical characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease is self-assembly and accumulation of soluble amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides into insoluble fibrils and plaques. READ MORE

19. Protein Misfolding in Human Diseases
Abstract : There are several diseases well known that are due to aberrant protein folding. These types of diseases can be divided into three main categories:Loss-of-function diseasesGain-of-toxic-function diseasesInfectious misfolding diseases Most loss-of-function diseases are caused by aberrant folding of important proteins. 20. The Interaction Between the Chaperonin GroEL and Human Carbonic Anhydrase II : Protein Folding and Stability Studies
Abstract : The presence of GroEL/ES during the refolding of human carbonic anhydrase II was found to increase the yield of active enzyme from approx. 70 to approx. 100%. This chaperone action on the enzyme could be obtained by adding GroEL alone, and the time course in that case was only moderately slower than the spontaneous process. READ MORE
