1. Theoretical and Biochemical : Advancing Protein Structure Investigations with Complementing Computations
Abstract : Life as we know it today would not exist without proteins. The functions of proteins for us and other organisms are linked to their three-dimensional structures. As such, protein structure investigations are a crucial contribution for understanding proteins and the molecular basis of life. READ MORE

2. Protein-water interactions studied by molecular dynamics simulations
Abstract : Most proteins have evolved to function optimally in aqueous environments, and the interactions between protein and water therefore play a fundamental role in the stability, dynamics, and function of proteins. Although we understand many details of water, we understand much less about the protein-water interface. READ MORE

3. Foreign molecules in biomembranes : Molecular effects on intact stratum corneum and model lipid systems
Abstract : This thesis mainly explores how the molecular mobility of lipid and protein components in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), varies with different conditions and upon adding foreign compounds. These studies require methods that makes it possible to detect and characterize the minor amount of fluid components in the highly ordered solid SC sample with resolved molecular information. 4. Water and Protein Dynamics in Biological Systems Studied by Magnetic Relaxation Dispersion
Abstract : The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that the magnetic relaxation dispersion (MRD) technique can provide information of relevance to protein biophysics, magnetic resonance imaging and cell biology. By immobilizing proteins with covalent cross-links, intermittent protein dynamics on the previously inaccessible ns-µs time scale could be probed with MRD via the exchange of water molecules between internal cavities and the surrounding bulk solvent phase. 5. Gas-Phase Protein Structure Under the Computational Microscope : Hydration, Titration, and Temperature
Abstract : Although the native environment of the vast majority of proteins is a complex aqueous solution, like the interior of a cell, many analysis methods for assessing chemical and physical properties of biomolecules require the sample to be aerosolized; that is, transferred to the gas-phase. An important example is electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, which can provide a wide range of information about e. READ MORE
