  1. 1. From protein sequence to structural instability and disease

    Author : Lixiao Wang; Uwe Sauer; Sven Hovmöller; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : protein domain; remote homologue; intrinsically disorder unstructured proteins; protein function; point mutation; protein family protein stability; HMMs; CRFs; SVMs;

    Abstract : A great challenge in bioinformatics is to accurately predict protein structure and function from its amino acid sequence, including annotation of protein domains, identification of protein disordered regions and detecting protein stability changes resulting from amino acid mutations. The combination of bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics becomes essential for the investigation of biological, cellular and molecular aspects of disease, and therefore can greatly contribute to the understanding of protein structures and facilitating drug discovery. 2. 2. On protein structure, function and modularity from an evolutionary perspective

    Author : Robert Pilstål; Björn Wallner; Maria Sunnerhagen; Mauno Vihinen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioinformatics; structure; biology; intrinsical; disorder; protein; sequence; evolution; mutation; epistasis; function; allostery; dynamics; simulation; prediction; graph; network; bioinformatik; struktur; biologi; strukturbiologi; intrinsiellt; oordnad; protein; sekvens; evolution; mutation; epistasis; funktion; allosteri; dynamik; simulation; prediktion; graf; nätverk;

    Abstract : We are compounded entities, given life by a complex molecular machinery. When studying these molecules we have to make sense of a diverse set of dynamical nanostructures with wast and intricate patterns of interactions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic investigations of four neurological disorders : From phenotype to mutation

    Author : Anna Sillén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; genetic disease; chromosome; microsatellite; linkage analysis; mutation; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin; klinisk genetik; Clinical Genetics;

    Abstract : More than 5000, more or less rare, genetic diseases are known in man. A genetic disease is in most casesinherited from one generation to the next, and is caused by a change in the genetic code, a mutation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Engineering yeast for improved recombinant protein production

    Author : Yanyan Wang; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; point mutation; genome-scale modeling; recombinant protein; omics analysis; CRISPR Cas9; protein secretion; Saccharomyces cerevisiae;

    Abstract : Recombinant proteins are broadly used from basic research to therapeutic development and include industrial enzymes and pharmaceutical proteins. The increasing demand for improved production and enhanced quality of recombinant proteins requires robust biotech-based strategies to overcome the limitations of protein extraction from natural sources. 5. 5. Mutational effects on protein structure and function

    Author : Jonas Carlsson; Persson Bengt; Uwe Sauer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mutation; prediction; phenotypes; homology model; virtual screening; molecular dynamics; amyloid; cancer; membrane protein; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : In this thesis several important proteins are investigated from a structural perspective. Some of the proteins are disease related while other have important but not completely characterised functions. READ MORE
