  1. 16. Glutamate Turnover and Energy Metabolism in Brain Injury : Clinical and Experimental Studies

    Author : Carolina Samuelsson; Elisabeth Ronne-Engström; Lars Hillered; Eva Kumlien; Carl-Henrik Nordström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; glutamate; glutamine; lactate; pyruvate; microdialysis; GLT-1; energy metabolism; intracranial pressure; cerebral perfusion pressure; subarachnoid hemorrhage; ischemia; epilepsy; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : During brain activity neurons release the major excitatory transmitter glutamate, which is taken up by astrocytes and converted to glutamine. Glutamine returns to neurons for re-conversion to glutamate. This glutamate-glutamine cycle is energy demanding. READ MORE

  2. 17. Characterization of the Alzheimer's disease-associated clac protein

    Author : Linda Söderberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia in elderly people and is neuropathologically characterized by the presence of extracellular senile plaques (SPs) in the brain. SPs are mainly composed of the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta), proteolytically derived from the amyloid beta-precursor protein by sequential cleavages performed by beta- and gammasecretase, to generate Abeta species of 40 and 42 amino acids, respectively. 3. 18. Factors influencing the turnover of olfactory receptor neurons

    Author : Maja-Lena Deckner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; olfactory bulb; olfactory epithelium; axotomy; regeneration; apoptosis; BBB; VEGF; blood vessels; trophic factor; BDNF; trkB; tenascin;

    Abstract : The olfactory system has a striking capacity for neuronal plasticity throughout life and the olfactory epithelium is able to generate both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the normal adult animal as well as after experimental injury. In contrast to primary sensory neurons, olfactory axons are able to cross the border between the PNS and CNS in the olfactory bulb after transection in the adult animal. READ MORE

  4. 19. Regulatory Functions of Protein Phosphorylation in Plant Photosynthetic Membranes

    Author : Rikard Fristedt; Alexander Vener; Thomas Pfannschmidt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is the process in plants, algae and cyanobacteria which converts light energy from the sun into carbohydrates and at the same time produces oxygen from water. Both carbohydrates and oxygen are essential to sustain life on earth. READ MORE

  5. 20. Studies on coactosin-like protein interaction with 5-lipoxygenase

    Author : Marija Rakonjac; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Leukotrienes (LTs) are proinflammatory lipid mediators derived from polyunsaturated arachidonic acid, which is ester-bound at the sn-2 position of glycerol in cellular phospholipid bilayers. In LTs biosynthesis, 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) represents the key enzyme, which catalyzes two initial steps. READ MORE
