  1. 1. Blood pressure, blood pressure development and potential risk factors for hypertension with special reference to metabolic factors and kidney function

    Author : Karl Kristjansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypertension; blood pressure; women; epidemiology; weight change; metabolic factors; insulin; glucose tolerance; albuminuria; proteinuria; risk factors.;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to search for predictors of blood pressure development with special reference to anthropometric, metabolic and renal function variables.Study populations and methods: Two large long-term prospective population studies, The Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, Sweden carried out since 1968-69, with 1462 women between 38 and 60 years old at baseline and 24 year follow-up, and The Reykjavik Study, Iceland, which started in 1967 with an initial participation of 8285 men and 9183 women in various age groups. 2. 2. Epidemiological Studies of Preeclampsia : Maternal & Offspring Perspectives

    Author : Jóhanna Gunnarsdóttir; Anna-Karin Wikström; Sven Cnattingius; Ulf Högberg; Alexander Smárason; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Placental dysfunction; blood pressure; small-for-gestational-age; fetal growth restriction; intrauterine; prenatal exposure; postnatal height gain; linear growth;

    Abstract : Preeclampsia is a placental-related disorder characterized by generalized endothelial activation. Vascular predisposition is associated with the occurrence of preeclampsia and the recurrence risk is substantial. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects of Regulation of GFR and Tubular Function in the Diabetic Kidney : Roles of Adenosine, Nitric Oxide and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Patrik Persson; Fredrik Palm; Peter Hansell; Bengt Rippe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; glomerular filtration rate; renal blood flow; insulin; renal hemodynamics; micropuncture; oxygen; NADPH-oxidase; apocynin; streptozotocin; l-arginine; CGS21680; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Diabetic nephropathy is the main cause for initiation of renal replacement therapy and early symptoms in patients include increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), decreased oxygen tension and albuminuria, followed by a progressive decline in GFR and loss of kidney function. Experimental models of diabetes display increased GFR, decreased tissue oxygenation and nitric oxide bioavailability. READ MORE

  4. 4. New predictive and diagnostic biomarkers for preeclampsia

    Author : Ulrik Dolberg Anderson; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Abstract Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that affects 3-8% of all pregnancies leading to maternal- and fetal morbidity and mortality. The etiology is still not known in detail. Previous findings have shown an up regulation of the genes coding for fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in preeclamptic placentas. READ MORE

  5. 5. Prognosis and progression in chronic kidney disease

    Author : Marie Evans; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Analgesics; Chronic Kidney Disease; Epidemiology; Dialysis; Glomerular Filtration Rate; Lead Metal Exposure; Survival;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a life threatening condition with high risk of pre-term death and need for dialysis. The population prevalence of CKD has been estimated to 10-13% for both Europe and the USA. READ MORE
