  1. 1. Venous thromboembolism. Aspects on risk factors, diagnostic tools and treatment with thrombin inhibition

    Author : Karin Wåhlander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : deep vein thrombosis; pulmonary embolism; venous thromboembolism; Factor V Leiden; prothrombin gene G20210A; thrombin inhibition; ximelagatran; melagatran; PT; APTT; D-dimer.;

    Abstract : Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a multifactorial disease. The aims of the present thesis were to investigate Factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutations as potential risk factors for VTE during and after major surgery, to compare different D-dimer assays and evaluate their usefulness in the diagnosis of DVT, to investigate clinical effects, safety and pharmacokinetic properties of an oral thrombin inhibitor (ximelagatran) when treating VTE and finally to investigate the usefulness of coagulation assays (APTT and PT) during treatment with thrombin inhibition. 2. 2. Treatment of deep vein thrombosis and risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism

    Author : Per Lindmarker; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Deep vein thrombosis; pulmonary embolism; low molecular mass heparin; therapy; outpatients; recurrent; risk factors; APC-resistance; factor V G1691A; prothrombin G20210A; side;

    Abstract : A cute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are different clinical presentations of the same underlying disease, namely venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is a common and potentially fatal condition. Risk factors associated with the first and probably also subsequent events of VTE are hereditary or acquired. READ MORE

  3. 3. Thrombin generation in different cohorts : Evaluation of the haemostatic potential

    Author : Roza Chaireti; Tomas Lindahl; Elvar Theodorsson; Sven Almer; Per Morten Sandset; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to evaluate thrombin generation in patients with thrombophilia (Paper I), in patients with venous thromboembolism (Paper II), in healthy women during the menstrual cycle (Paper III), in patients with liver disease (Paper IV) and in patients with mild deficiency of factor VII (Paper V).For this purpose, thrombin generation was measured in platelet poor plasma by the calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT®) assay.
