  1. 1. Getting a Feel for Tactile Space : Exploring Haptic Perception of Microtexture

    Author : Martin Arvidsson; Birgitta Berglund; Steven Hsiao; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Haptic; fine texture perception; multidimensional scaling; tactile; roughness; vibrations; spatial; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : The present thesis is based on three studies that research different aspects of fine texture perception. The goal is to better understand the mechanisms involved in haptic perception of textures below 200 µm, also known as microtextures. READ MORE

  2. 2. Unwanted wanted sounds : Perception of sounds from water structures in urban soundscapes

    Author : Maria Rådsten Ekman; Mats E Nilsson; Catherine Lavandier; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Perception; psychoacoustics; soundscape; water-sound; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : Water structures, for example, fountains, are common design elements in urban open public spaces. Their popularity is probably explained by their visual attractiveness. Less is known about how the sounds of water struc-tures influence the urban soundscape. READ MORE

  3. 3. Distributed cognition in home environments : The prospective memory and cognitive practices of older adults

    Author : Mattias Forsblad (Kristiansson); Nils Dahlbäck; Corinna Kruse; Fredrik Stjernberg; Oskar Lindwall; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Distributed cognition; intelligent use of space; cognitive aging;

    Abstract : In this thesis I explore how older people make use of, and interact with, their physical environment in home and near-by settings to manage cognitive situations, specifically prospective memory situations. Older adults have in past research been shown to perform better on prospective memory in real-life settings than what findings in laboratory-like settings predict. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of environmental acoustic factors, individual differences and musical training on speech perception in simulated classrooms

    Author : Douglas MacCutcheon; Robert Ljung; Daniel Västfjäll; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; speech in noise; cognition; perception; musical training; spatial listening; virtual classroom environment; bakgrundsljud; kognition; taluppfattning; musikalisk träning; rumsligt lyssnande; virtuella klassrumsmiljöer; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Abstract : Formal learning takes place primarily through speech perception in classroom environments and is therefore dependent on the listener’s ability to cope with a number of acoustic factors that interfere with the speech signal. As classrooms are inclusive spaces accommodating learners with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds, this research investigated some of the ways in which individual differences in supporting cognitive skills are related to speech perception outcomes in various challenging acoustic environments.
