1. Pulmonary Atelectasis in General Anaesthesia : Clinical Studies on the Counteracting Effects of Positive End-Expiratory Pressure
Abstract : Partial lung collapse, i.e., pulmonary atelectasis, is common during general anaesthesia. The main causal mechanism is reduced lung volume with airway closure and subsequent gas absorption from preoxygenated alveoli. READ MORE

2. Synchronized delivery of inspired nitric oxide : Effects on oxygenation and pulmonary tension during artificial ventilation
Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is a mediator of vascular smooth muscle tension that metabolises rapidly in blood. NO delivered by inhalation can therefore be used as a selective pulmonary vasodilator to relieve pulmonary hypertension or to improve oxygenation with no systemic effects. READ MORE

3. Effects of Deep Breathing Exercises after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
Abstract : Deep breathing exercises are widely used in the postoperative care to prevent or reduce pulmonary complications, but no scientific evidence for the efficacy has been found after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The aim of the thesis was to describe postoperative pulmonary function and to evaluate the efficacy of deep breathing exercises performed with or without a blow bottle device for positive expiratory pressure (PEP) 10 cmH2O or an inspiratory resistance-positive expiratory pressure (IR-PEP) mask with an inspiratory pressure of -5 cmH2O and an expiratory pressure of +10 to +15 cmH2O. 4. Open lung concept in high risk anaesthesia : Optimizing mechanical ventilation in morbidly obese patients and during one lung ventilation with capnothorax
Abstract : Formation of atelectasis, defined as reversible collapse of aerated lung, often occurs after induction of anaesthesia with mechanical ventilation. As a consequence, there is a risk for hypoxemia, altered hemodynamics and impaired respiratory system mechanics. READ MORE

5. Esophageal and Gastroesophageal Junctional Cancer : Improving Patient selection, Treatment and Care
Abstract : Esophageal cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer-related death. Choice of surgical approach and individualized treatment is crucial. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate the introduction of minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) regarding oncological results and postoperative complications. READ MORE
