16. Inflammatory mechansims in pulmonary sarcoidosis
Abstract : Pulmonary sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology, characterised by an accumulation of CD4+ T-cells in the alveolar compartment and by granuloma formation and varying degrees of interstitial fibrosis. The initial clinical presentation may either be acute with fever, malaise, arthritis and/or erythema nodosum or insidious with cough, dyspnea, tiredness, and loss of weight. READ MORE

17. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 18. Evaluation and development of a capnodynamic method for estimation of pulmonary blood flow in a porcine model
Abstract : Effective pulmonary blood flow (EPBF) i.e. cardiac output (CO) minus shunt flow could be estimated by a capnodynamic equation. Via introduction of short pauses in the ventilatory pattern the required alterations of carbon dioxide are induced. READ MORE

19. Benefits of Spontaneous Breathing : Compared with Mechanical Ventilation
Abstract : When spontaneous breathing (SB) is allowed during mechanical ventilation (MV), atelectatic lung areas are recruited and oxygenation improves thereby. Whether unsupported SB at its natural pattern (without PEEP and at low pressure/small tidal volume) equally recruits and improves oxygenation, and if so by which mechanism, has not been studied. 20. Capnodynamic determination of effective pulmonary blood flow and end expiratory lung volume : studies in children and paediatric animal models
Abstract : Dynamic capnography is a haemodynamic and respiratory monitoring technique enabling continuous cardiac output (Effective Pulmonary Blood Flow, COEPBF) and end expiratory lung volume (Effective Lung Volume, ELV) assessment in mechanically ventilated subjects. The method utilizes variations in exhaled CO2, implemented via periods of deliberate changes in the respiratory pattern. READ MORE
