21. Cardiopulmonary bypass and the kidney - studies on patients undergoing cardiac surgery
Abstract : Acute kidney injury is a common complication after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and has a major impact on morbidity, mortality and costs. The mechanism of CPB-related renal impairment is not fully understood. READ MORE

22. Aspects of inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : a clinical study
Abstract : Development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) involves an amplified inflammatory response to tobacco smoke that results in a limitation of airflow. At present, the mechanisms underlying these inflammatory processes are not fully understood and insight into these mechanisms could be obtained through comparison of the processes in patients with COPD and appropriate controls. 23. Cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to mental stress with special reference to the regulation of human forearm blood flow
Abstract : The cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to a standardized mental stress test (Stroop's colour word conflict test CWT) were studied in 63 healthy and 11 hypertensive men by intraarterial pressure measurements, forearm blood flow by occlusion plethysmography and noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (ADR) determinations in arterial and venous plasma. One study included central hemodynamics by right heart catheterization and NA turnover by an isotope dilution method, permitting studies of NA kinetics in the whole body and in a regional vascular bed (the forearm) in hypertensive patients and age-matched controls. 24. Physiological effects of apnoeic oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen
Abstract : In anaesthetic practice, the inability to oxygenate and ventilate patients is a much-feared complication with risk for severe hypoxia-induced adverse outcomes. By administrating oxygen in the absence of spontaneous ventilation, apnoeic oxygenation may overcome these challenges by a prolonged time with sufficient oxygenation. READ MORE

25. Regional pulmonary vasoreactivity, with special reference to nitric oxide, prostacyclin and body posture
Abstract : The primary aim of the study was to investigate possible mechanisms behind the improved arterial oxygenation in ventilator-treated patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when turned into prone position. A secondary aim was to discover new knowledge of possible importance for treatment of patients with oxygenation problems in intensive care and during anesthesia. READ MORE
