1. Efficiency of building related pump and fan operation - Application and system solutions
Abstract : The electric energy use in Swedish non-industrial buildings is 71 TWh per year out of which 30 TWh per year is used for the operation of technical systems. A significant part of those 30 TWh/year is used for pump and fan operation. The Swedish parliament decided in 2009 on a national energy and climate plan. READ MORE

2. Choreography of a proton pump : Studies of charge-transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase
Abstract : In the last step of cellular respiration, electrons from metabolites are transferred to molecular oxygen, mediated by the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain. Some of these enzyme complexes couple these redox reactions to formation of an electrochemical proton gradient across the cell membrane. The proton gradient is used e.g. READ MORE

3. An Intense Attosecond Light Source - Towards Extreme Ultraviolet Pump-Probe Experiments
Abstract : This thesis presents important steps towards performing high-intensity attosecond pump-probe experiments at the Lund high-intensity extreme ultraviolet (XUV) beamline, which followed two complementary paths: maximization of the XUV intensity available in the interaction region with a gas target, and providing attosecond temporal resolution. To maximize the energy of the XUV pulses generated via high-order harmonicgeneration (HHG), the macroscopic response of atoms to the driving infrared field was optimized. 4. Molecular machinery of a membrane-bound proton pump : Studies of charge transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase
Abstract : In cellular respiration, electron transfer from the breakdown of foodstuff is coupled to the formation of an electrochemical proton gradient. This is accomplished through proton translocation by respiratory complexes, and the proton gradient is subsequently used e.g. to drive ATP production. READ MORE

5. Generation and metrology of ultrashort pulses and their application in attosecond science
Abstract : This thesis deals with the dynamical processes in atoms and small molecules initiated by the absorption of ultrashort, coherent light pulses. The studied phenomena takeplace on the femtosecond (1 fs = 10−15 s) and attosecond (1 as = 10−18 s) timescales and critically depend on the properties of the light fields that drive them. READ MORE
