6. Quantitative Laser Doppler Flowmetry
Abstract : Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is virtually the only non-invasive technique, except for other laser speckle based techniques, that enables estimation of the microcirculatory blood flow. The technique was introduced into the field of biomedical engineering in the 1970s, and a rapid evolvement followed during the 1980s with fiber based systems and improved signal analysis. READ MORE

7. Quantitative diffuse reflectance spectroscopy : myocardial oxygen transport from vessel to mitochondria
Abstract : In the field of biomedical optics, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is a frequently used technique for obtaining information about the optical properties of the medium under investigation. The method utilizes spectral difference between incident and backscattered light intensity for quantifying the underlying absorption and scattering processes that affects the light-medium interaction. 8. Affinity-, Partition- and Permeability Properties of the Human Red Blood Cell Membrane and Biomembrane Models, with Emphasis on the GLUT1 Glucose Transporter
Abstract : The human glucose transporter GLUT1 is abundant in red blood cells, the blood-brain barrier and epithelial cells, where it mediates the transport of the energy metabolite, glucose. In the present work some properties of GLUT1, including affinity binding of both substrates and inhibitors, transport rates as well as permeabilities of aromatic amino acids and drug-membrane interactions were analyzed by chromatographic methods. 9. Contributions to quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI
Abstract : Background: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) has the potential to produce images of physiological quantities such as blood flow, blood vessel volume fraction, and blood vessel permeability. Such information is highly valuable, e.g., in oncology. READ MORE

10. Quantitative methods for diffusion measurements in fluorescence microscopy
Abstract : In this work, statistical methods are developed for mapping mass transport locally based on images collected using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Besides presenting raster image correlation spectroscopy as an established method in fluorescence microscopy, we introduce a single particle tracking method which takes advantage of the raster scanning of the image in a confocal microscope.
