  1. 1. Ticks and Tick-borne Encephalitis Virus : From Nature to Infection

    Author : Naveed Asghar; Magnus Johansson; Patrik Dinnétz; Travis Taylor; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Co-occurrence; Environmental factors; Flavivirus; Ixodes ricinus; Natural foci; Non-coding region; Poly A tract; Quasispecies; Questing ticks; Scandinavia; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Vegetation.; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier;

    Abstract : Vector-borne diseases are an increasing global threat to humans due to climate changes, elevating the risk of infections transmitted by mosquitos, ticks, and other arthropod vectors. Ixodes ricinus, a common tick in Europe, transmits dangerous tick-borne pathogens to humans. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mathematical Models of Molecular Evolution

    Author : Martin Nilsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dynamic fitness landscapes; quasispecies; error thresholds; evolved mutation rates; evolution in dynamic environments;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with mathematical models of Darwinian evolution in populations of simple living organisms. We study models which describe how the representation of different gene sequences in the population is affected by the fundamental forces of evolutionary processes, such as selection pressure, the mutation rate and the time dynamics of the underlying fitness landscape. 3. 3. Studies of drug resistance in minor HIV quasispecies

    Author : Halime Ekici; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The main objective was to study drug resistance mutations (DRM) in the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) gene of minor HIV-1 quasispecies, not detectable with standard techniques. Sensitive allele-specific PCR (AS- PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were developed to study resistance to drugs of relevance in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); the nucleoside analogue RT inhibitor (NRTI) lamivudine (3TC) and the non-nucleoside RT inhibitors (NNRTIs) efavirenz (EFV) and nevirapine (NVP). 4. 4. Ultra-deep characterization of viral quasispecies in HIV infection

    Author : Charlotte Hedskog; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : HIV-1 has the ability to rapidly diversify and adapt to changes in its environment, such as evading the host immune response, altering cell tropism, and developing resistance to antiretroviral drugs. Minority HIV-1 variants have been shown to be of clinical significance, especially those with non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) drug resistance mutations or determinants of CXCR4 phenotype (X4-virus). 5. 5. Factors influencing the evolution of HIV-1

    Author : Markus Birk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV; antiretroviral treatment; evolution; gag; pol; env;

    Abstract : Due to the high replication rate and the low fidelity of the viral reverse transcriptase (RT), various mutations are introduced continuously into the gene pool of HIV-1. Together with recombination events this leads to the evolution of countless quasispecies. READ MORE
