  1. 21. Regenerating the brain : lessons from the red spotted newt

    Author : Daniel Berg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Unlike mammals, adult salamanders can regenerate their brain after injury in a process fuelled by neurogenesis. The aim of this thesis is to identify the cells that give rise to new neurons after injury and examine the mechanisms controlling the initiation and termination of brain regeneration in the newt. 2. 22. TGF-B signaling in Neuroblastoma and Renal Cell Carcinoma

    Author : Anna-Karin Boström; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Renal Cell Carcinoma; ATN; Regeneration; Notch; TGF-B; EMT; Neuroblastoma; MYCN; miR-17-92;

    Abstract : The tubular cells of the adult kidney are normally mitotically quiescent, in stark contrast to the massive regenerative capacity of the injured renal epithelium. In Paper I we characterized a new cell population of progenitor cells using ALDH as a selection marker. READ MORE

  3. 23. New preclinical strategies for characterization and development of anticancer drugs

    Author : Henning Karlsson; Peter Nygren; Rolf Larsson; Mattias Belting; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colorectal cancer; spheroids; green fluorescent protein; VLX50; VLX60; VLX600; nitazoxanide; radiation; radiosensitizer; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development has shifted drug discovery towards target driven drug development the last decades, but the development of effective cancer drugs has been hampered by the lack of predictive preclinical models. 3-D cultures, considered to more accurately reflect solid tumors in vivo, have been proposed as one way to increase the predictability of clinical efficacy in cancer drug discovery and development. 4. 24. Identification of Unique Hematopoietic Stem Cell Properties

    Author : Jens Nygren; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; Hematologi; extracellulära vätskor; Haematology; extracellular fluids; cell cycle; fusion; transdifferentiation; plasticity; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; quiescence; hematopoietic stem cell; self-renewal;

    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are sufficient and required for life long production of all blood cell lineages. Steady state HSCs are largely quiescent and we demonstrate that the kinetics of HSC cell cycling are slower compared to more committed progenitor cells also during expansion and self-renewal ex vivo and in physiological conditions. 5. 25. Expression and activity of Myc network proteins during cell cycle progression and differentiation

    Author : Nikita Popov; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Transcription factors of Myc network are the key regulators of cell proliferation, cell death and differentiation. Identified as a transforming oncogene, myc is the driving force of a variety of human cancers, and inactivation of myc in tumors can cause their rapid regression. READ MORE
