  1. 1. On aging and the role of Ubp3 in heterochromatic gene silencing and protein quality control

    Author : David Öling; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aging; Protein damage; Segregation; Transcriptional silencing; rDNA; UBP3; SIR2; Protein aggregates;

    Abstract : Aging is characterized by a build-up of damage in organisms ranging from protists to multi-cellular species. This damage adversely affects core components such as DNA and proteins which are necessary to sustain life. READ MORE

  2. 2. Non-protein-coding RNA : Transcription and regulation of ribosomal RNA

    Author : Stefanie Böhm; Ann-Kristin Östlund Farrants; Brian McStay; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ribosomal RNA; non-coding RNA; ribosomal genes; rDNA gene; B-WICH; chromatin remodelling; histone modification; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Cell growth and proliferation are processes in the cell that must be tightly regulated. Transcription of ribosomal RNA and ribosomal biogenesis are directly linked to cell growth and proliferation, since the ribosomal RNA encodes for the majority of transcription in a cell and ribosomal biogenesis influences directly the number of proteins that are synthesized. 3. 3. Chromatin remodelling of ribosomal genes - be bewitched by B-WICH

    Author : Anna Vintermist; Ann-Kristin Östlund Farrants; Ross D. Hannan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chromatin remodelling; ribosomal genes; rDNA; transcription; RNA polymerase I transcription; RNA polymerase III transcription; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Transcription of the ribosomal genes accounts for the majority of transcription in the cell due to the constant high demand for ribosomes. The number of proteins synthesized correlates with an effective ribosomal biogenesis, which is regulated by cell growth and proliferation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inferring evolution in bacteria using Markov chains and genomic signatures

    Author : Daniel Dalevi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Prediction suffix tree; Markov chains; Molecular evolution; Bioinformatics; Gene order rearrangements; Horizontal gene transfer; Variable length Markov chains;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the development of methods and models in evolutionary molecular biology. The techniques are also applicable to other similar biological problems. The first contribution is a novel classifier using fixed and variable length Markov chains that can discriminate between bacterial DNA of different species. READ MORE

  5. 5. Transcriptional regulation of ribosomal RNA gene : actin, myosin and beyond

    Author : Aishe Angeletti Sarshad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the eukaryotic cell nucleus, actin and nuclear myosin 1c (NM1) are key regulators of RNA polymerase I (Pol I) transcription and function across the entire ribosomal RNA biogenesis pathway. At the gene level, actin interacts with Pol I and together with NM1 they have been suggested to facilitate assembly of Pol I at the gene promoter. READ MORE
