11. Pluralism and unity in education : on education for democratic citizenship and personal autonomy in a pluralist society
Abstract : The overarching theme of this thesis concerns the possibility of balancing the values of unity and pluralism in education in developed nation states characterized by an increasing pluralism when it comes to the beliefs and values of its citizens. The author suggests that democracy has a normative basis in the principle of reciprocity which can be supported in an overlapping consensus by reasonable persons who differ in their moral, religious and philosophical beliefs. 14. Neighbourhood Politics in Transition : Residents’ Associations and Local Government in Post-Apartheid Cape Town
Abstract : This study focuses on the changing practices of South African residents’ associations and their relationship with political parties and local government from 1990 to 2006, with the aim to examine how associations in Cape Town respond when they are confronted with a new democratic institutional and political context. Two empirical questions guide the analysis: How do residents’ associations perceive that the changing political context has affected them in their attempts to influence agenda-setting and decision-making? And how can we understand the process in which they decide to act, or not act, in response to important changes in their political environment? Drawing on social movement theory, most importantly the notions of political opportunity structures and framing processes, an analysis is made of the most significant changes in Cape Town’s post-apartheid institutional and political context. 15. The Art of Enacting the Impossible: A Conceptual, Empirical and Methodological Exploration of Constructive Resistance by the Kurdish Movement in Turkey
Abstract : The Kurdish movement in Turkey has since 2005 been trying to establish democratic autonomy, an overarching proposition for the reconstruction of the society from the bottom up, based on ideals of radical democracy, women’s liberation, social ecology, communalism and more. This dissertation takes the current resistance of the Kurdish movement in the context of democratic autonomy as a starting point to deepen the empirical and conceptual insights on resistance as enacted alternatives (‘constructive resistance’); the role of emotions in resistance; and the ways in which our understanding of resistance could inform research methods.
