1. Airway mechanics of mice and men
Abstract : In this thesis we explore and further develop several techniques used in the animal laboratory as well as in the clinical setting. In particular, we expand the understanding and usefulness of plethysmographic techniques in small rodents. READ MORE

2. A clinical positron emission tomography facility : 2-¹⁸FDG studies : development and results
Abstract : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a tracer technique used for quantitative in vivo studies of physiological and biochemical processes. Because of the use of positron-emitting radionuclides such as 11-C, 13-N, 15-O and 18-F, which are isotopes of the biologically ubiquitous elements, it is possible to label radiopharmaceuticals which trace biochemical processes precisely. 3. MRI evaluation and image processing in gel dosimetry. A study of selected MRI properties and image processing in 3D gel dosimetry
Abstract : Gel dosimetry is a new dosimetry method applied in radiation therapy. Gel dosimeters consist of a radiation sensitive gel, which can integrate absorbed doses from several radiation sources or beams. The dose to the gel can be evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a procedure that is the focus of the present thesis. READ MORE

4. Irradiation of members of the general public from radioactive caesium following the Chernobyl reactor accident. Field studies in a highly contaminated area in the Bryansk region, Russia
Abstract : From 1990 to 1998, estimations of the effective dose from external as well as internal irradiation from 137Cs and 134Cs were carried out for inhabitants in rural villages in the Bryansk region, Russia, highly contaminated due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The villages were situated about 180 km from the Chernobyl power plant and the deposition of 137Cs was in the range 0. READ MORE

5. Microvascular inflammatory response in the skin
Abstract : This thesis examines the microvascular inflammatory response in the skin. The microvascular response includes vasodilatation and plasma exudation. In the first three studies, the combined response was measured in guinea pig skin with a technique based on detection of radiolabelled protein. READ MORE
