  1. 1. Transient ischemia for radioprotection : an experimental study with degradable microspheres

    Author : Jan Ola Forsberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : .... READ MORE

  2. 2. Fractionated irradiation of salivary glands : loss and protection of function

    Author : Ulrika Funegård; Thorild Ericson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Irradiation; salivary glands; saliva composition; antioxidants; radioprotection;

    Abstract : Radiotherapy of malignancies in the head and neck often involves the major and minor salivary glands in the radiation field. Adverse effects, such as dry mouth symptoms, are common after such therapy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Heavy-ion transport codes for radiotherapy and radioprotection in space

    Author : Davide Mancusi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; charge-changing cross sections; transport codes; radiotherapy; Monte-Carlo codes; heavy ions; radioprotection in space;

    Abstract : Simulation of the transport of heavy ions in matter is a field of nuclear science that has recently received attention in view of its importance for some relevant applications. Accelerated heavy ions can, for example, be used to treat cancers (heavy-ion radiotherapy) and show some superior qualities with respect to more conventional treatment systems, like photons (x-rays) or protons. 4. 4. Fragmentation cross sections: measurement, systematics and model developement

    Author : Chiara La Tessa; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; projectile total charge-changing cross sections; weak factorization; strong factorization; projectile partial charge-changing cross sections; heavy-ions; space radioprotection; nuclear fragmentation;

    Abstract : Man's attitude towards space exploration has been mainly limited by the health risk related to the exposure to the space radiation environment. Some components of the space field can be characterized by such a high flux to kill a man if directly exposed and in general, all space radiation constitutes a hazard for astronauts engaged in long-term missions. 5. 5. Radiation and matter: how do they play with each other?

    Author : Davide Mancusi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heavy ions; models; transport codes; Boltzmann equation; Monte Carlo; radioprotection in space; radiotherapy; nuclear reactions;

    Abstract : The propagation of radiation is affected by the presence of matter; at the same time, the physicochemical properties of matter are modified by the passage of radiation. The interplay of radiation and matter is of crucial importance in many modern applications: accelerated heavy ions, in particular, can be used in radiotherapeutical treatments of some cancers; moreover, they are present in the space radiation environment and represent a serious threat to the health of spaceship crews and to the functionality of electronic equipment on board.
