  1. 1. Climate and dengue fever early warning based on temperature and rainfall

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå University

    Author : Yien Ling Hii; Umeå universitet.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dengue fever; temperature; rainfall; forecasting model; early warning; epidemic; dengue risk index; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : Background: Dengue is a viral infectious disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The disease causes a significant health burden in tropical countries, and has been a public health burden in Singapore for several decades. Severe complications such as hemorrhage can develop and lead to fatal outcomes. READ MORE

  2. 2. On Sahelian-Sudan rainfall and its moisture sources

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University

    Author : Abubakr A. M. Salih; Stockholms universitet.; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sudan; Sahel; rainfall; land use; deforestation; moisture sources; moisture transport; Lagrangian; moisture tagging; regional model; climate modeling; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : The African Sahel is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate variability at different time scales. It is an arid to semi-arid region with limited water resources. The summer rainfall is one of these sources, but it exhibits pronounced interannual variability. This thesis presents several aspects of Sahelian Sudan rainfall. READ MORE

  3. 3. Water Erosion Modelling using Fractal Rainfall Disaggregation, a Study in Semiarid Tunisia

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University

    Author : Sihem Jebari; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2009]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil erosion; semiarid; Tunisia; rainfall; fractal; diaggregation;

    Abstract : In the Tunisian semiarid area, water erosion processes have led to negative economic and environmental consequences in a context of limited water resources. To characterize and predict these degradation phenomena, a comprehensive high-resolution data base on erosive rainfall, together with siltation records for 28 small reservoirs were analyzed. 4. 4. Properties of heavy rainfall in an East Asian monsoon catchment - Analysis of daily rain gauge data

    University dissertation from Department of Water Resources Engineering, Lund Institute of Technology, Lund University

    Author : Cecilia Svensson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [1998]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; China.; Huai River; East Asian monsoon; typhoon; Mei-Yu front; fractals; empirical orthogonal function analysis; correlation analysis; probable maximum precipitation; storm movement; seasonal occurrence; Rainfall; spatial pattern; Hydrogeology; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; teknisk geografi; Geophysics; physical oceanography; meteorology; Geofysik; fysisk oceanografi; meteorologi;

    Abstract : The East Asian monsoon has a strong seasonal effect on the rainfall regime of Eastern China. In order to mitigate floods and conserve the water for use throughout the year, dams and other hydro-structures are built. The design of the structures requires knowledge of the rainfall characteristics that influence the inflow to them. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Use of Press Archives in the Temporal and Spatial Analysis of Rainfall-Induced Landslides in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 1980-2005

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Elias Garcia-Urquia; Uppsala universitet.; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; press archives; landslide database; urban landslides; critical rainfall intensity; antecedent rainfall; rainfall frequency contour lines; matrix method; landslide susceptibility index; Tegucigalpa; Honduras; Hurricane Mitch; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys; Earth Science with specialization in Environmental Analysis;

    Abstract : The scarcity of data poses a challenging obstacle for the study of natural disasters, especially in developing countries where the social vulnerability plays as important a role as the physical vulnerability.  The work presented in this thesis is oriented towards the demonstration of the usefulness of press archives as a data source for the temporal and spatial analysis of landslides in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for the period between 1980 and 2005.
