1. Study on the Function of Translation Initiation Factor IF1
Abstract : Initiation is the first step in protein biosynthesis representing a fundamental event in cell life which determines fidelity, efficiency and regulation of gene expression. In addition to the ribosome and mRNA, three protein factors IF1, IF2 and IF3 are involved in the initiation of translation in prokaryotes. READ MORE

2. In search of a biosensor for DNT detection : Studies of inducer response and specificity of DntR
Abstract : The primary aim of the work presented in this thesis was to change the inducer specificity of the DntR protein in order to improve the response to DNT. The long-term goal is to use this protein in a biosensor for DNT, a signature compound for detection of the explosive TNT. READ MORE

3. Membrane Protein Tailoring and Structural Studies of Leukotriene C4 Synthase
Abstract : Despite a dramatic increase in the number of proteins that have been structurally characterized in recent years, there are still less than 200 unique structures of membrane proteins known today. This is only 1% of the total number of unique protein structures found in structural databases worldwide. READ MORE

4. Metabolic engineering and random mutagenesis for improved xylose utilisation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : In this thesis I have summarised my work on the analysis and improvement of xylose utilisation by recombinant S. cerevisiae. A metabolic flux model was developed and used to analyse the intracellular fluxes in the recombinant xylose utilising S. cerevisiae TMB 3001 cultivated in chemostat at various dilution rates and xylose/glucose concentrations. 5. Vitreoscilla Haemoglobin. Genetic Fusions and Metabolic Characterisation
Abstract : Vitreoscilla is an obligate aerobic bacterium living in oxygen-poor environments such as stagnant ponds and decaying vegetable matter. Vitreoscilla expresses a homodimeric haemoglobin (VHb) when subjected to oxygen-limited conditions. READ MORE
