  1. 1. Essays in Political Economics

    Author : Jaakko Meriläinen; Torsten Persson; David Strömberg; Toke Aidt; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Class-based voting; close elections; economic policy; ideology; local government; political parties; political promotions; political representation; politician quality; rank effects; regression discontinuity design; voting behavior; Economics; nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : When Does Regression Discontinuity Design Work? Evidence from Random Election OutcomesWe use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non-experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. READ MORE

  2. 2. Automorphic forms and string theory: Small automorphic representations and non-perturbative effects

    Author : Henrik Gustafsson; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; instantons; automorphic forms; automorphic representations; Eisenstein series; U-duality; non-perturbative effects; string theory;

    Abstract : This compilation thesis stems from a project with the purpose of determining non-perturbative contributions to scattering amplitudes in string theory carrying important information about instantons, black hole quantum states and M-theory. The scattering amplitudes are functions on the moduli space invariant under the discrete U-duality group and this invariance is one of the defining properties of an automorphic form. READ MORE

  3. 3. Parameter Estimation for Multisensor Signal Processing : Reduced Rank Regression, Array Processing and MIMO Communications

    Author : Karl Werner; Sergiy Vorobyov; KTH; []

    Abstract : This thesis deals with three estimation problems motivated by spatial signal processing using arrays of sensors. All three problems are approached using tools from estimation theory, including asymptotical analysis of performance and Cramér-Rao lower bound; Monte Carlo methods are used to evaluate small sample performance. 4. 4. Equity in welfare evaluations : the rationale for and effects of distributional weighting

    Author : Gunnel Bångman; Lars Hultkrantz; Fredrik Carlsson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; weighted cost-benefit analysis; equity; distributional weights; social welfare; income distribution; risk aversion; social marginal value of income; altruism; paternalism; marginal utility of income; social inequality aversion; stated preferences; Economics; Nationalekonomi; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the issue of weighted cost-benefit analysis (WCBA). WCBA is a welfare evaluation model where income distribution effects are valued by distributional weighting. The method was developed already in the 1970s. The interest in and applications of this method have increased in the past decade, e. READ MORE

  5. 5. Osteotropic cytokines : expression in human gingival fibroblasts and effects on bone

    Author : Py Palmqvist; Andersson Göran; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : osteoblasts; osteoclasts; fibroblasts; cytokines; IL-6; LIF; OSM; IL-4; IL-3; bone resorption; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Bone metabolism is regulated by endocrine and paracrine signalling molecules influencing bone cells in the continuously remodelling bone tissue. These molecules include a variety of osteotropic stimulatory and inhibitory cytokines. READ MORE
