  1. 11. Spinal cord injury : mechanical and molecular aspects

    Author : Anna Josephson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord; syringomyelia; MRI; fMRI; neurotrophin; Nogo; Nogo receptor; regulation;

    Abstract : Traumatic spinal cord injury leads to full or partial paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury. The annual incidence of spinal cord injury in the United States is 3-5 per 100,000 and in Sweden is 1.5-2 per 100,000. This translates to 11,000 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury in the US and 150 in Sweden each year. READ MORE

  2. 12. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 3. 13. Immunofluorescence Investigation on Neuroendocrine Secretory Protein 55 (NESP55) in Nervous Tissues

    Author : Yongling Li; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NESP55; neuropeptdides; chromogranins; the CAD cell line; rat; spinal cord; sympathetic ganglia; retrograde tracing; immunofluorescence; confocal microscopy; secretory pathway;

    Abstract : The chromogranin family is a group of acidic, soluble, and heat-stable proteins widespread in various neuronal, neuroendocrine and endocrine tissues, where they are subcellullarly located in the secretory granules, participating in the formation of the granules. Extracellularly, chromogranins may act as protein precursors, proteolytically processed to various small bioactive peptides. READ MORE

  4. 14. A regeneration strategy for spinal cord injury

    Author : Jonathan Nordblom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : A severe traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently leads to a devastating and permanent disability. Due to glial scarring and an inhibitory local environment, regrowth of disrupted axons in the injured spinal cord beyond a lesion is obstructed, thus preventing reconnection with neurons at the other side. 5. 15. The use of adipose derived stem cells in spinal cord and peripheral nerve repair

    Author : Mallappa K Kolar; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; adipose derived stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Abstract : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities.
