11. METABOLIC PROPERTIES OF RYE PRODUCTS Focusing on insulinaemia, glycaemic profile and appetite regulation in healthy subjects
Abstract : The prevalence of metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and the insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) are increasing worldwide. However, disturbances in the metabolic status can be prevented by changing the daily diet towards more whole grains, vegetables, legumes and dairy products. READ MORE

12. Cellular correlates of sensory processing in the mammalian audio-vestibular brainstem
Abstract : Efferent projections to the vestibular inner ear organs have remained elusive. To shed light on their physiological role, a first investigation of the vestibular efferent (VE) neurons in the brainstem was undertaken by using a transgenic mouse which expresses a fluorescent marker in the VE neurons. 13. Exploration of Conditions Affecting Cytokine Production in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract : Cytokines are soluble signalling mediators within the immune system, and have been shown to be of importance in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This thesis studied the production of cytokines in experimental models of T1D and during transplantation of insulin-producing islets of Langerhans. READ MORE

14. Studies on the efficacy of potent anti-HIV-1 therapy on virological and immunological factors
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to assess to which extent treated human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infected patients with a seemingly controlled, defined as undetectable plasma HIV-1 RNA levels (< 50 copies/ml), or low-grade viral replication, exhibited pattems in virological and immunological factors which could suggest a continuation of the disease process. We have therefore analysed the kinetics of HIV-1 DNA levels (Papers I and II), the viral evolution (Paper II), the changes in Beta-chemokine levels (Paper 111) and sCD27 levels (Paper IV), and the appearance of drug resistance associated mutations (Paper V) in such patients. 15. Sensorimotor function following anterior cruciate ligament injury : movement control, proprioception and neuropsychological perspectives
Abstract : Background: The high incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in sports suggests an involvement of both biomechanical and neurocognitive risk factors. Athletes are constantly exposed to challenging sports scenarios, which are often characterised by high-intensity movements combined with a multi-stimuli environment and continuous psychological pressure.
