  1. 21. PET studies of the serotonin system in major depression and its treatment

    Author : Mikael Tiger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The serotonin system has been implicated in major depression since the 1960s, mainly based on the serotonin enhancing properties of antidepressants. Positron emission tomography, PET, is the in vivo molecular imaging method with the best spatial resolution. READ MORE

  2. 22. On Fever Mechanisms & Preoptic Signalling

    Author : Anna Sundgren Andersson; Robert Dantzer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology;

    Abstract : Fever, a 1-4 °C elevation of the body temperature, is part of the systemic inflammatory response to infection or tissue damage, and it is believed to be a potent host defence. The underlying physiological mechanisms of the febrile response are one of the two main objectives in this thesis, where studies conducted in whole animals (rats and mice), chiefly aimed at clarifying the cytokine cascade in fever. 3. 23. Experimental studies on novel pharmacological strategies in the treatment of schizophrenia

    Author : Amani Eltayb; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Schizophrenia; L-dopa; topiramate; 5-HT2C; citalopram; WAY 100635; CAR; catalepsy;

    Abstract : The modified dopamine (DA) hypothesis of schizophrenia suggests a hyperdopaminergic state in subcortical brain regions, which is believed to cause positive symptoms, while cortical regions may show a hypodopaminergic state which is believed to generate negative and cognitive symptoms. Positive symptoms are improved by typical antipsychotic drug (APD) treatment. READ MORE

  4. 24. Adenosine Regulation of Neutrophil Function

    Author : Stefan Zalavary; Bertil Fredholm; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The neutrophil granulocyte is an essential component of the human immune system. When rrricrobes invade the body, the highly motile neutrophils quickly leave the vascular compartment and approach, engulf and kill the intruders by releasing a battery of antimicrobial substances. 5. 25. Novel pharmacological treatment alternatives for schizophrenia

    Author : Charlotte Wiker; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Antipsychotic drugs are commonly divided into typical (first generation) and atypical (second generation) antipsychotic drugs. Clinically effective doses of typical antipsychotic drugs generate a striatal dopamine D2 receptor occupancy of about 70 80%, approaching a level that is associated with a high risk of extrapyramidal side effects.
