16. Prognostic factors in renal cell carcinoma : evaluation of erythropoietin and its receptor, carbonic anhydrase IX, parathyroid hormone-related protein and osteopontin
Abstract : A prognostic factor is a marker or a feature that can be used to estimate the risk of recurrence of disease, metastatic spread and clinical outcome. Despite intensive search for more sophisticated markers in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), few have added prognostic information to earlier described factors like stage of disease, nuclear grade, tumour type, and in metastatic disease; performance status, anaemia, hypercalcaemia and increased erythrocyte sedimentation. 17. Rational and Combinatorial Engineering of Affinity Proteins Towards Therapeutical Applications
Abstract : Protein engineering has had an immense impact on the development of biological drugs, including replacement therapies with engineered versions of insulin or factor VIII to treat diabetes or bleeding disorders, and monoclonal antibodies to treat cancer and various other malignancies. Now, with the next generation of treatment modalities coming up, including monoclonal reagents based on alternative scaffolds, gene and cell therapies, the importance of protein engineering to tailor-make these treatments is likely to increase further. 18. Adseverin – An Immune-Specific Target of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin
Abstract : The environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) induces thymus atrophy and immunosuppression in all animal species examined and these effects constitute a potential risk to humans. TCDD can via binding to the intracellular aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), modulate transcription of a number of genes and the aim of this thesis has been to identify such genes, which may explain the mechanisms behind TCDD-mediated immunotoxicity. 19. Pamoplantar Pustulosis. Pathogenetic Studies with Special Reference to the Role of Nicotine
Abstract : Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic disease of unknown pathogenesis. Most of the patients were smokers. High prevalence of a number of autoimmune diseases was observed among the patients (thyroid disease 14%, gluten intolerance 8%, diabetes type 1 3%). Eosinophils and neutrophils were found in large numbers in the pustules. READ MORE

20. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and CC-chemokine receptor-2 in two different conditions related to atherosclerosis
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in the industrialized parts of the world. The pathological process is characterised by increased lipid influx to the arterial wall due to elevated circulating levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL is oxidatively modified by reactive oxygen species forming oxLDL. READ MORE
