  1. 1. Structural Adaptation of DNA to Small Ligands and Recombination Proteins

    Author : Hye-Kyung Kim; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; triplex DNA; groove binders; intercalators; SANS; DNA; optical spectroscopy; recombination proteins;

    Abstract : In order to contribute to the understanding of mechanisms of recognition in nucleic acid systems, the interaction of DNA with a variety of ligands, representing different cases of adaptation of the double-helix structure, was studied using flow linear dichroism (LD), circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence and absorption spectroscopic techniques. A chiral hydrophobic metal complex, [Ru(dpphen)3]2+ was examined, since this had been reported to be the most efficient molecule to discriminate DNA handedness. READ MORE

  2. 2. Variation in length of proteins by repeats and disorder regions

    Author : Rauan Sagit; Arne Elofsson; Andrey Kajava; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein length; repeats; domain repeats; protein evolution; duplication; tandem duplication; intrinsic disorder; intrinsically disordered; variation in length; insertion; deletion; recombination; expansion; contraction; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Protein-coding genes evolve together with their genome and acquire changes, some of which affect the length of their protein products. This explains why equivalent proteins from different species can exhibit length differences. READ MORE

  3. 3. The evolution of the nuclear envelope

    Author : Nadja Neumann; Anthony Poole; Gáspár Jékely; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear pore complex; bouquet; meiosis; nucleus; eukaryote evolution; nucleoporin; tree of life; stem group; recombination; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The nucleus is one of the defining features of eukaryotes and the question of its origin is intimately linked to the evolution of the eukaryotic cell. It is delimited by a double lipid bilayer called the nuclear envelope, which separates the nuclear interior from the cytoplasm. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evolution of human alpha-herpesviruses

    Author : Peter Norberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HSV-1; HSV-2; VZV; evolution; recombination; phylogenetic analysis;

    Abstract : Herpesviridae is a large virus family with more than 100 members, which are highly disseminated among animals. Three sub-families have been classified; alpha-herpesviruses, beta-herpesviruses and gamma-herpesviruses. READ MORE

  5. 5. Helicobacter pylori : molecular mechanisms for variable adherence properties

    Author : Anna Vallström; Anna Arnqvist; Kristian Riesbeck; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : H. pylori; adherence; BabA; SabA; Leb; sLex; phase variation; recombination; vesicles;

    Abstract : More than half of all people worldwide are infected with H. pylori. The infection always cause a gastric inflammation that may develop into peptic ulcer disease or gastric cancer. Attachment proteins, adhesins, mediate specific adherence of H. READ MORE
