  1. 1. Interactions between the opioid and serotonin systems in chronic pain : quantitative live cell study by fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy (FCCS)

    Author : Vlad Radoi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Chronic pain is a major health issue worldwide. It enacts considerable suffering on the affected individuals and significantly increases the societal burden, as it is the most common reason why individuals seek sick leave and ask for medical help. READ MORE

  2. 2. Intracellular free amino acids and nutritional status in children with chronic renal failure on different treatments

    Author : Alberto Canepa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Chronic renal failure; transplantation; nutritional status; children; amino acids; plasma muscle; polymorphonuclear granulocytes; proteolysis; red blood cells;

    Abstract : In untreated adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), and in chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and kidney-transplanted patients, typical plasma and muscle intracellular amino acid (AA) patterns have been described. Similar AA abnormalities to those seen in adult patients have been observed in plasma and muscle tissue of children with CRF, but no studies have been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma and muscle in children on CAPD or after kidney transplantation. 3. 3. Studies of anemia in the myelodysplastic syndromes

    Author : Martin Jädersten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Myelodysplasia; growth factors; Cox regression; delayed entry; left truncation; mortality; international prognostic scoring system; IPSS; who-classification based prognostic scoring system; WPSS; thalidomide analogue; IMiD; hematopoietic stem cell; adhesion; stroma; matrix; osteonectin; matricellular protein; NPM1; immunohistochemistry.;

    Abstract : Background: The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) constitute a heterogeneous group of malignant bone marrow disorders, characterized by chronic anemia and increased risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The first line therapy of anemia in MDS is erythropoietin (EPO) with or without granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). READ MORE

  4. 4. Platelet function in polycythemia vera : studies of agonist and cytokine induced platelet activation

    Author : Katarina Le Blanc; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Polycythemia vera (PV) is a malignant myeloproliferative disorder characterized by an increased red cell mass and most often accompanied by leukocytosis and thrombocytosis. The pathogenic mechanisms behind PV are still largely unknown. READ MORE

  5. 5. Erythrocyte amino acids in health and renal failure and their association to the IGF-I/IGFBP-1 axis

    Author : José Carolino Divino Filho; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : amino acid; ASP DNA; catabolism dialysis; erythrocytes; glutamate; glutamine; health; human; IGF-I; IGFBP-1; muscle; plasmaprotein intake; rat; renal failure; uraemia;

    Abstract : Abnormalities in amino acids (AA) metabolism in uraemia have mainly been reported to occur in plasma and muscle. No investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma, muscle and red blood cells (RBC) simultaneously, although the RBC pool of free AA constitutes a large proportion of the free AA in blood, and RBC are involved in the interorgan transport of AA.
