  1. 1. Regulation of nitrogen fixation in Rhodospirillum rubrum : Through proteomics and beyond

    Author : Tiago Selao; Agneta Norén; Daniel Arp; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Rhodospirillum rubrum; nitrogen fixation; redox balance; switch-off; DRAT; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Adaptability is one of the reasons for the success of bacteria, allowing them to survive in conditions where no other organisms would be able to thrive. Nitrogen deficiency, for example, can be a limiting factor for the growth of micro-organisms, as this element is an essential part of almost all types of biomolecules. READ MORE

  2. 2. Thioredoxin and glutaredoxin systems under oxidative and nitrosative stress

    Author : Xiaoyuan Ren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Our knowledge about reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) has been changed from simple damaging molecules to redox signaling mediators. ROS/RNS mediated signaling is mainly based on the reversible post-translational modifications of cysteine which works as a switch for protein functions. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the role of penicillin-binding protein SpoVD in endospore cortex assembly

    Author : Ewa Bukowska-Faniband; Molekylär cellbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sporulation; cortex; Bacillus subtilis; penicillin-binding proteins; SpoVD; peptidoglycan;

    Abstract : Bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Clostridium can form endospores as a strategy to survive unfavourable environmental conditions. Endospore formation involves synthesis of cortex, a thick layer of modified peptidoglycan that surrounds the spore. READ MORE

  4. 4. The structural basis for the catalytic specificity of manganese lipoxygenases : 3D structure analysis of the lipoxygenase of Magnaporthe oryzae

    Author : Anneli Wennman; Ernst H. Oliw; Marcia Newcomer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxylipin; lipoxygenase; crystal structure; crystallography; HPLC; mass spectrometry; yeast; site-directed mutagenesis; fungi; Biochemical Pharmacology; Biokemisk farmakologi;

    Abstract : Lipoxygenases (LOX) catalyze regio- and stereospecific oxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to hydroperoxides. These hydroperoxides are further metabolized to leukotrienes and lipoxins in mammals, and are involved in asthma and inflammation. LOX of animals and plants contain iron as catalytic metal (FeLOX). 5. 5. Early steps in the biogenesis of the bc1 complex in yeast mitochondria : The role of the Cbp3-Cbp6 complex in cytochrome b synthesis and assembly

    Author : Steffi Gruschke; Martin Ott; Dennis Winge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mitochondria; respiratory chain assembly; bc1 complex; mitochondrial gene expression; translational regulation; hemylation; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The inner membrane of mitochondria harbors the complexes of the respiratory chain and the ATP synthase, which perform the key metabolic process oxidative phosphorylation. These complexes are composed of subunits from two different genetic origins: the majority of constituents is synthesized on cytosolic ribosomes and imported into mitochondria, but a handful of proteins, which represent core catalytic subunits, are encoded in the organellar DNA and translated on mitochondrial ribosomes.
