  1. 6. The endothelin system and cardiopulmonary dysfunction in porcine endotoxin shock

    Author : Michael Wanecek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Endothelin; endothelin receptor antagonism; cyclooxygenase inhibition; endotoxin; sepsis; shock; pulmonary hypertension; cardiac dysfunction;

    Abstract : The endothelium-derived peptide endothelin-1, acting via the endothelinA and endothelinB receptors, possesses strong vasoconstrictive properties shown to affect pulmonary and systemic circulation as well as cardiac function. During septic and endotoxin shock a marked increase in circulating plasma endothelin-1 levels is observed which is associated with morbidity, cardiac dysfunction and lung injury. READ MORE

  2. 7. Propagation of weak shock waves in an elliptical cavity

    Author : Göran Gustafsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : The propagation of weak shock waves in a planar elliptical cavity is studied theoretically and experimentally. The results are of interest in the design of an elliptical high-speed water jet generator operating in a transient fashion with electrically generated shocks in the acoustic regime. READ MORE

  3. 8. Transient Electromagnetic Waves in Nonlinear Media

    Author : Daniel Sjöberg; Institutionen för elektro- och informationsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Signal processing; nonlinear materials; Electromagnetic waves; instantaneous response; waveguides; shock waves; entropy condition; Elektronik och elektroteknik; Electronics and Electrical technology; Signalbehandling; Electromagnetism; optics; acoustics; Elektromagnetism; optik; akustik;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the propagation of transient electromagnetic waves in nonlinear media. It consists of a General Introduction and five scientific papers. The General Introduction gives a broad overview of nonlinear electromagnetic phenomena. READ MORE

  4. 9. Mapping ultrastructural effects of proteotoxic stress on S. cerevisiae

    Author : Katharina Keuenhof; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; heat shock; stress; electron microscopy; ultrastructure; nuclear envelope budding;

    Abstract : Cells are the basic building blocks of any living being, whether the organism consists of only one, or many cells. The different cellular components interact with one another to maintain the viability of the cell. An essential element of cells are proteins – peptide chains folded into a specific conformation unique to every protein. READ MORE

  5. 10. Development of techniques for measurements of shock wave response and moisture content in granite

    Author : Dan Tilert; Lars Mattsson; Mikael Sjödahl; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Industrial engineering and economy; Industriell teknik och ekonomi;

    Abstract : For measuring small, fast deformations on a micrometre scale optical methods are common. Various forms of interferometry are available, and holography is another possibility. However, if there are complications such as limited space and hazardous environments special demands arise. READ MORE
