  1. 1. Regional and local variation in plant species richness

    Author : Cecilia Dupré; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; coastal meadows; deciduous forests; dry grasslands; grazing; habitat configuration; habitat quality; hump-shaped curve; life history traits; regional species pool; soil factors; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examine the variation in plant species richness along gradients of productivity and disturbance in grasslands and forest habitats in southern Sweden, and I compare the documented patterns with theoretical predictions. Moreover, I evaluate the relative importance of habitat quality and habitat configuration for the occurrence of field layer species in deciduous forests. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biological diversity values in semi-natural grasslands : indicators, landscape context and restoration

    Author : Mathias Öster; Ove Eriksson; Martin Zobel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; connectivity; Hygrocybe; indicators; landscape history; plants; pollen limitation; species-area effects; surrogate species; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Semi-natural grasslands, which are a declining and fragmented habitat in Europe, contain a high biodiversity, and are therefore of interest to conservation. This thesis examines how plant diversity is influenced by the landscape context, and how plant and fungal diversity can be targeted by practical conservation using indicator species and congruence between species groups. 3. 3. Fishing the gene pool : Genetic structure, admixture and behavioural complexity in fisheries management

    Author : Kim H. Berndt; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fisheries management; Fishery stock; Stock discrimination; Genetic structure; Genetic admixture; Admixture zone; Stock substructure; Phenotypic divergence; Gadus morhua; Salmo trutta;

    Abstract : Prudent management of marine fish resources relies on separation and management of biologically meaningful groups of conspecifics, termed fishery stocks, often depicted as self-sustaining, spatiotemporally separated and demographically independent entities. Such stock discrimination has however proven challenging. READ MORE

  4. 4. Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands

    Author : Bryndís Marteinsdóttir; Eriksson Ove; Cousins Sara A. O.; Johan Ehrlén; Meelis Pärtel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Assembly rules; dispersal limitation; environmental filtering; establishment limitation; ex-arable fields; functional traits; landscape history; semi-natural grasslands; seed bank; seed augmentation; seed rain; trait based filtering; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. READ MORE

  5. 5. Recruitment and distribution patterns of plants in Swedish semi-natural grasslands

    Author : Åsa Eriksson; Brita Svensson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Semi-natural pastures with different histories of management are nowadays the main remnants of the traditional agrarian landscape in southern Sweden. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the importance of features of the present-day landscape and its management history for species distribution and abundance patterns in Swedish semi-natural pastures, with a particular focus on factors affecting recruitment processes.
