  1. 16. Optimization methods for sedimentation and denitrification in activated sludge

    Author : Serena K. R. Hasselblad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; solids flux; wastewater treatment; secondary clarifier; activated sludge; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : Denitrification on readily biodegradable carbon compounds and separation of biological sludge from effluent water are examples of critical sub-processes for nitrogen removal in activated sludge. The aim of this thesis was to find operational strategies and newmethods to optimize these processes. READ MORE

  2. 17. Fluid Management in Haemodialysis : Studies on current practices and new methods

    Author : Jenny Stenberg; Hans Furuland; Magnus Lindberg; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Bernd Stegmayr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Haemodialysis; Fluid management; Fluid overload; Bioimpedance spectroscopy; Dry weight; Brain natriuretic peptide; Decision aid; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Chronic fluid overload has been identified as an independent predictor of mortality in haemodialysis patients, and 30% remain fluid overloaded at dry weight. The use of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) in fluid management may improve blood pressure control and cardiovascular status. READ MORE

  3. 18. Preaspiration in the Nordic languages : synchronic and diachronic aspects

    Author : Pétur Helgason; John J. Ohala; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Linguistics; Lingvistik;

    Abstract : Preaspiration—the production of glottal friction at the juncture of a vowel and a consonant—appears to be typologically rare but is an areal linguistic feature of Northwestern Europe. This study contains a survey of the known geographical spread of preaspirated stops, their phonological distribution and phonetic expressions in some Nordic dialects. READ MORE

  4. 19. Weight scaling : methods to determine the quantity of pulpwood

    Author : Mikael Hultnäs; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Scaling pulpwood according to its weight for payment purposes is done in many places around the world. In North America, pulpwood is commonly scaled according to its green weight, while in Central Europe the wood is commonly scaled according to its dry weight. In Sweden pulpwood is measured according to its volume. READ MORE

  5. 20. Effects of drought on boreal forest understory species

    Author : Irena A. Koelemeijer; Kristoffer Hylander; Johan Asplund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity conservation; boreal forests; bryophytes; canopy cover; climate change; drought; extreme climatic events; forest management; forest understory; fungi; lichens; plants; rainout shelter; soil communities; soil moisture; transplant experiment; Ecology and Evolution; ekologi och evolution;

    Abstract : Extreme climatic events, such as droughts, can have large effects on biodiversity. Drought effects in forest understories are variable over small spatial scales and can be exacerbated, or buffered, by the local vegetation structure, distance to forest edges, hydrology, and soil characteristics.
