1. Xenograft Rejection : A Study of Cytokine mRNA Expression in Experimental Models
Abstract : Acute cellular xenograft rejection of ICCs triggered mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a), Th1 associated cytokines (IL-12p40, IL-2 and IFN-g) and Th2 associated cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). The peak values and the kinetics of the mRNA expression indicated that acute cellular xenograft rejection is enhanced by the proinflammatory response and mediated by the Th1 associated response, whereas the function of the Th2 associated response most likely is to counteract the Th1 associated cytokines and thereby inhibit bystander damage by the delayed type hypersensitivity like rejection process. 2. Studies of Rejection in Experimental Xenotransplantation
Abstract : One main hurdle to xenotransplantation, i.e. transplantation between different species, is the immunological barrier that the organ meets in the recipient. The aim of this thesis was to characterise xenogeneic rejection mechanisms by using the concordant mouse-to-rat heart transplantation model. READ MORE

3. Attraction and Rejection : On the love–hate relationship between stars and black holes
Abstract : Solitary stars wandering too close to the supermassive black hole at the centre of their galaxy may become tidally disrupted, if the tidal forces due to the black hole overcome the self-gravity holding the star together. Depending on the strength of the encounter, the star may be partially disrupted, resulting in a surviving stellar core and two tidal arms, or may be completely disrupted, resulting in a long and thin tidal stream expected to fall back and circularize into an accretion disc (the two cases are illustrated on the cover of this thesis). 4. Rejection and Immunosuppression at Uterus Transplantation: an experimental study in rodents
Abstract : Uterus transplantation is developed as a possible treatment for patients with absolute uterine factor infertility. There has been one attempt to transplant a human uterus, which however failed and more basic research is needed before another attempt is performed. READ MORE

5. On ischemia/reperfusion injury and rejection in concordant xenotransplantation to the rat
Abstract : Studies in concordant (without preformed antibodies) rodent xenotransplantation (transplantation between species) models have focused, to date, on immunological disparities. In allotransplantation (transplantation within species), there is evidence suggesting that early ischemic events may contribute to later rejection episodes and to the development of chronicrejection features.
