  1. 1. Myocardial electromechanical function in long QT syndrome

    Author : Dafni Charisopoulou; Michael Y. Henein; Annika Rydberg; Anders Jonzon; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Long QT syndrome; stress-echocardiography; left ventricular filling; mechanical dispersion; diastolic myocardial function; exercise; arrhythmia; electromechanical window; speckle-tracking echocardiography; myocardial relaxation sequence.; kardiologi; Cardiology; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Abstract : AIM: The aim of this thesis is to assess, in LQTS and according to genotype, the myocardial electromechanical (EM) function response to exercise, its relation to symptoms and its response to b-blocker therapy. To achieve this aim, we conducted 4 studies with the following specific objectives: i. READ MORE

  2. 2. Insights into the effect of myocardial revascularisation on electrical and mechanical cardiac function

    Author : Ihab Ramzy Guirguis; Michael Y Henein; Stellan Mörner; Reidar Winter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; myocardial infarction; natriuretic peptides; echocardiography; ventricular function; atrial function; surgical revascularisation; speckle tracking echocardiography; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Acute coronary syndrome is known for its effect on cardiac function and can lead to impaired segmental and even global myocardial function. Evidence exists that myocardial revascularisation whether pharmacological, interventional or surgical results in improvement of systolic and diastolic left ventricular (LV) function, particularly that of the long axis which represents the sub-endocardial function, known as the most sensitive layer to ischaemia. 3. 3. Insights into left atrial response to pressure and volume overload

    Author : Matteo Lisi; Michael Henein; Sergio Mondillo; Lars-Åke Lars; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Keywords Mitral regurgitation; aortic stenosis; speckle tracking echocardiography; heart transplantation; left atrial strain; left ventricualr function; right ventricular function; myocardial fibrosis;

    Abstract : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish the ability of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA) response to pressure and volume overload respectively in aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting LA and right ventricular (RV) fibrosis in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) undergoing heart transplantation (HTx).I demonstrated that assessment of left ventricular (LV) long axis systolic velocity and amplitude of excursion is more sensitive than simple determination of ejection fraction (EF) for revealing the beneficial impact of MR surgery on overall LV systolic performance. 4. 4. Left ventricular function's relation to load, experimental studies in a porcine model

    Author : Roman A'roch; Michael Haney; Jan Poelaert; Lars-Åke Brodin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heart function; preload; afterload; contractility; myocardial tissue velocity; speckle tracking; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Loading conditions are recognized to influence ventricular function according to the Starling relationship for length/stretch and force.  Many modern echocardiographic parameters which have been announced as describing ventricular function and contractile status, may be confounded by uncontrolled and unmeasured load. 5. 5. Left atrial function in health and disease

    Author : Mark Henein; Per Lindqvist; Stellan Mörner; Reidar Winter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left atrium; Doppler echocardiography; atrial interaction; atrial pressure;

    Abstract : The Objectives of this thesis are:1) To study possible atrial interaction in patients with right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to significant pulmonary (PS) and aortic valve stenosis (AS), respectively.2) To assess left atrial (LA) intrinsic myocardial function and its relationship to indirect measures of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF).
