Abstract : This anthropological study examines the meanings and practices of female "circumcision" and initiation in relation to identity and social change in contemporary Muslim Jola society, Senegal, West Africa. During the 20th century, clitoridectomy spread - allegedly as part of Islam - and became essential for a Jola woman's identity as a "real" woman and mother, and an important aspect of the women's initiation ritual. Abstract : Attic Black Figure and Red Figure pottery was continuously imported in Cyprus for about 300 years; the first imports are noted ca 580/575 BC, and the last ca 325/300 BC, at about the same time (294 BC) as Cyprus was annexed by Ptolemy I and the city-kingdoms of Cyprus ceased to exist. The material presented in this thesis amounts to 895 pieces of pottery and every possible effort was made to include all known pottery found in Cyprus. READ MORE
