    Abstract : Type I diabetes is caused by environmentally initiated, progressive autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells in genetically susceptible individuals, which results in insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. At diagnosis, about 10-20 % of beta cells remain, but after insulin therapy is started, a period with regained secretive capacity follows. READ MORE
