  1. 21. End stage renal disease in type 1 diabetes : time trends and risk factors

    Author : Cecilia Toppe; Anna Möllsten; Gisela Dahlquist; Torild Skrivarhaug; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; End stage renal disease; renal replacement therapy; type 1 diabetes; diabetes nephropathy; socioeconomy and epidemiology; epidemiologi; Epidemiology; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Sweden has a high incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the incidence is increasing worldwide. The incidence is now twice as high as when the registration of childhood onset T1D in Sweden started in 1977. One of the major risk factors for developing late complications such as renal failure (ESRD) is duration of T1D. READ MORE

  2. 22. Erythropoiesis in anemia of rencl failure and malignancy : Studies on erythropoietin, iron, and transferrin receptor : by Soheir Beshara

    Author : Soheir Beshara; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; erythropoiesis; anemia; renal transplantation; prostatic adenocarcinoma; erythropoietin; transferrin receptor; hemorheology positron emission tomography; iron hydroxide sucrose; pharmacokinetics; iron deficiency; 52Fe; 59Fe; red cell utilization; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Erythropoietin (Epo) and iron are essential requirements for erythropoiesis. Serum transferrin receptor (S-TfR) is a marker of total erythropoiesis and tissue iron availability. In patients with renal insufficiency, successful renal transplantation leads to correction of anemia and improvement in erythropoiesis. READ MORE

  3. 23. Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Diabetes : Experimental Studies in the Rat

    Author : Jan Melin; Bengt Rippe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; diabetes mellitus; ischemia reperfusion; rat; end-stage renal disease; inflammation; fibrosis; hyaluronan; CD44; treatment; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the leading causes of end stage renal failure. An increased susceptibility to renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-injury was found in DM rats. Unilateral renal ischemia for as short as 20 minutes led to an irreversible progressive injury in DM kidneys, whereas the injury in non-DM kidneys was almost reversible. READ MORE

  4. 24. Heparin-binding protein and organ failure in critical illness

    Author : Jonas Tydén; Joakim Johansson; Magnus Hultin; Jakob Walldén; Sören Berg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heparin-binding protein; Critical care; Shock; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Acute kidney injury; Ventilator induced lung injury; Renal clearance; Anaesthesiology; anestesiologi;

    Abstract : Background: For patients severely ill enough to require care in an intensive care unit (ICU), both the disease itself (e.g. bacteria in the blood in sepsis or fractures after trauma) and effects of the immune system can cause circulatory, pulmonary, or renal dysfunction. Leukocytes play a dominant role in the immune system. READ MORE

  5. 25. Impact of renal dysfunction on serum Prostate-Specific Antigen

    Author : Laila Bruun; Internmedicin - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Urologi; hK2; Urology; intra-individual variation; elimination; peritoneal dialysis; renal dysfunction; kidney transplantation; hemodialysis; nefrologi; nephrology; PSA;

    Abstract : Measurement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in blood is an important tool in detection for prostate cancer. PSA occurs in several molecular forms in blood: mainly as a free form with a molecular mass of 28 kDa; and as PSA complexed to alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, complexed PSA, with a molecular mass of 90 kDa.
