1. Electrochemical Reactions of Quinones at Conducting Polymer Electrodes
Abstract : Proton-coupled multielectron transfer reactions are of great abundance in Nature. In particular, two-proton-two-electron transfers in quinone/hydroquinone redox couples are behind oxidative phosphorylation (ADP-to-ATP) and photosystem II. READ MORE

2. Tailoring residue-derived carbon materials for the removal of wastewater contaminants : adsorption and surface properties
Abstract : The availability of effective, low-cost wastewater treatment is necessary for increased water recycling and the prevention of environmental pollution on a global scale. Adsorption on activated carbons is commonly applied in wastewater treatment, but the high cost of conventional activated carbons limits the use of this technique. READ MORE

3. Industrial Symbiosis in the Biofuel Industry : Quantification of the Environmental Performance and Identification of Synergies
Abstract : The production of biofuels has increased in recent years, to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. However, current production practices are heavily criticized on their environmental sustainability. READ MORE

4. Design of renewable and functional polyamides and polyhydroxyurethanes with tunable structure-property relationships
Abstract : Redesigning polymeric materials and rethinking their use is imperative in the prospect of a more sustainable future. Critical aspects in this endeavor are the use of renewable monomers to decrease the environmental footprint, implementing green syntheses and production processes and the design for increased recyclability as an end-of-life option to diverge from the generation of plastic waste. 5. Polygeneration District Heating and Cooling Systems Based on Renewable Resources
Abstract : Traditional district heating (DH) and district heating and cooling (DHC) systems have to address two principal challenges: phase-out of fossil fuels in favor of renewables; and profit instability related to declines in heating and cooling demands along with electricity price fluctuations. These obstacles can be overcome at once through upgrading these systems to a polygeneration concept by means of a retrofitted air-steam gasifier and gas upgrading equipment, enabling the use of renewable feedstocks such as refuse derived fuel (RDF) and municipal solid waste (MSW).
