  1. 1. Speciation and Metabolic rate : Insights from an avian hybrid zone

    Author : S. Eryn McFarlane; Anna Qvarnström; Jenny Boughman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resting metabolic rate; life history; hybridization; speciation; reproductive isolation; Ficedula flycatcher; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : The role of divergent climate adaptation in speciation has received surprisingly little scientific attention. My dissertation research focused on how resting metabolic rate (RMR) relates to the build up of prezygotic and postzygotic isolation in a natural Ficedula flycatcher hybrid zone. READ MORE

  2. 2. Costs, benefits and constraints in the evolution of avian reproductive tactics: a study on the blue tit

    Author : Erik Svensson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reproductive timing; selection analysis; natural selection; mate quality; nestlings; sex ratio; DNA-content; flow cytometry; ELISA; BMR; energetics; immunocompetence; immune system; sexual conflict; nestling mortality; thermoregulation; moult; reproductive costs; reproductive effort; Parus caeruleus; blue tit; birds; juvenile survival; laying date; food supply; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this study I have investigated the various factors influencing reproductive tactics among breeding blue tits (Parus caeruleus). The study was carried out in a nestbox-breeding population of marked individuals at the Revinge Area, outside Lund, southern Sweden. READ MORE

  3. 3. Environmental pollutants and the reproductive system in birds : Developmental effects of estrogenic compounds

    Author : Cecilia Berg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Avian embryo; test system; xeno-estrogen; endocrine disruption; reproductive organ differentiation; oviduct; testis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : A number of environmental pollutants have been shown to mimick the action of the female sex hormone estrogen and are, therefore, suspected to be responsible for reproductive abnormalities seen in wildlife. Test systems which can be used in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals with estrogenic effects are consequently needed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Breeding System Evolution and Pollination Success in the Wind-Pollinated Herb Plantago maritima

    Author : Emil Nilsson; Jon Ågren; Pia Mutikainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Breeding system; mating system; gynodioecy; male sterility; reproductive output; self-compatibility; self-incompatibility; wind-pollination; founder event; genetic structure; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examined variation in sex expression and mating patterns in the sexually polymorphic, wind-pollinated herb Plantago maritima. With a combination of field studies, greenhouse experiments, and genetic analyses, I (a) examined factors influencing sex ratio variation in gynodioecious plants (in which hermaphrodites and females coexist), (b) discovered variation in breeding system, (c) investigated density-dependence of seed production, and (d) documented genetic variation within and among populations close to the northern range margin in Europe. 5. 5. Toxicological studies of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) : Impact on the reproductive system and gut microbiota

    Author : Radwa Almamoun; Oskar Karlsson; Paula Pierozan; Harri Alenius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dibutyl phthalate; Antiandrogen; Gut microbiota; Reproductive toxicity; Endocrine disrupting chemicals; Environmental contaminants; Phthalates; Plastics; 3D cell culture model; Exposome; Toxicology; Environmental Sciences; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The potential health impact of exposure to anthropogenic chemicals has raised major concerns worldwide. Phthalates are mainly used in the plastic industry and have been associated with adverse effects in humans. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the dominant phthalates with a ubiquitous presence in the environment. READ MORE
