  1. 11. Strengthening conservation through green infrastructure : linking protected areas, habitats and species

    Author : Ewa Orlikowska; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The green infrastructure (GI) concept was developed to mitigate habitat fragmentation. The European Union (EU) defines GI as “a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas …designed and managed to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services and to improve connectivity of protected areas in order to promote multifunctional landscapes”. 2. 12. Signaling for color change in melanophores : and a biosensor application

    Author : Annika M. Karlsson; Samuel Svensson; Margareta Wallin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : color change; melanophores; tyrosine; phosphorylations; melatonin; nitric oxide; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Melanophores are dark brown pigment cells located in the skin of fish, amphibia, reptiles, and many invertebrates. The color of the animal can change via rearrangement of pigment granules, melanosomes, in the cells. The dark melanophores can either hide colorful cells so that the animal appears dark, or let through colors from underneath. READ MORE

  3. 13. Nesting ecology of the grass snake (Natrix natrix) and its implications for conservation

    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; agriculture; anthropogenic; climate; embryonic development; incubation; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : The onset of agriculture about 12,000 years ago has had a major influence on the biodiversity of plants and animals. Unfortunately, the rapid changes in agricultural practices that has occurred in recent times has negatively affected many farmland species. READ MORE

  4. 14. Molecular, micro- and ultrastructural investigations of labile tissues in deep time

    Author : Johan Gren; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; eumelanin; fossils; histology; integument; IR microspectroscopy; melanin; melanosomes; molecular palaeontology; ToF-SIMS; XAS;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises investigations of microstructures and molecular remains, preserved in a variety of fossil specimens. The results are presented in six papers, collectively aiming to thoroughly examine fossil traces of such remains by employing a combination of both established and relatively new analytical methods. Abstract : Heathland is a familiar landscape type in southwest Sweden. It is open with few trees, and the vegetation is dominated by dwarf-shrubs growing on nutrient-poor soils. Dry heaths with Heather Calluna vulgaris and wet heaths with Bell Heather Erica tetralix are common vegetation communities in the heathland, and they often form mosaics. READ MORE
