  1. 11. The role of substance P in respiratory control in the newborn : effects of morphine and nicotine

    Author : Jonas Berner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : We breathe in order to maintain oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH levels within the physiological range in response to the metabolic demands of the body. To achieve this, the respiratory control system is dependent on input from peripheral and/ central chemosensitive areas and on participation of different neuromodulator systems. READ MORE

  2. 12. Phagolysosomal pH measurements in alveolar macrophages

    Author : Kristina Nyberg Lindborg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : alveolar clearance; alveolar macrophages; phagocytosis; phagolysosomal pH; respiratory burst; silica particles; S. cerevisiae; C. albicans;

    Abstract : Background: Mechanical clearance of insoluble particles from the alveolar part of the lung is known to be a slow process in humans, i. e., one or several years. Particles deposited in the alveolar region are phagocytized by alveolar macrophages (AM). READ MORE

  3. 13. Redox effects on neutrophils in wound healing conducted by wound dressings and hyperbaric oxygen

    Author : Herman Sahlin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : neutrophil granulocyte; wound healing; wound dressing; reactive oxygen species; NO; hyperbaric oxygen; bacterial killing;

    Abstract : The increased influx of neutrophils into chronic wounds results in increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and lipid peroxidation products (LPP), as well as a ROS-induced increase in protease levels. The NO and LPP impair the respiratory burst response of the neutrophils and reduce their capacity to kill bacteria and digest debris. READ MORE

  4. 14. Leukocyte dysfunction and inflammatory markers in patients with chronic kidney disease and patients on dialysis

    Author : Jenny Olsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and patients on dialysis are at risk for serious infectious complications. This is partly due to leukocyte dysfunction, which is a consequence of both uremic retention solutes and of dialysis. READ MORE

  5. 15. Characterization of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae innate interactions with human cells

    Author : Irini Lazou Ahrén; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mykologi; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; inflammation; TLR4; LBP; protein D; nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae; beta-glucan;

    Abstract : Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a human pathogen causing diseases in the upper and lower respiratory tract. Otitis media-prone children and adults with cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are repeatedly infected by NTHi Research in recent years brought to light the entry and survival of NTHi in epithelial cells and macrophages.
