  1. 1. Genetic epidemiological aspects of obesity and related traits. Human studies in Swedish and North-American cohorts

    Author : Peter Jacobson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Obesity; candidate genes; metabolic syndrome; resting metabolic rate; respiratory quotient; assortative mating;

    Abstract : Aims: To investigate two obesity candidate genes, the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) and the adiponectin hormone (APM1), by screening their genomic sequences. To search the human genome for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to resting metabolic rate (RMR), and respiratory quotient (RQ). READ MORE

  2. 2. Why so different? - Aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing : Aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing

    Author : Eva Björkner; Anders Askenfelt; Ronald C. Scherer; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; operatic singing; musical theatre singing; voice source; subglottal pressure; flow glottogram; inverse filtering; formant frequencies; amplitude quotient AQ ; Music; Musikvetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing. The common aim of the studies was to identify respiratory, phonatory and resonatory characteristics accounting for salient voice timbre differences between singing styles. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pulse oximetry : methodological considerations : experimental, in vitro and human investigations

    Author : Magnus Vegfors; Ola Stenqvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Pulse oximeters monitor non-invasively the haemoglobin oxygen saturation. Light of two specific wavelengths, red and infrared light, is shined through a tissue, usually the finger, and the intensity of the light transmitted is measured. Oxyhaemoglobin absorbs the light differently when compared to reduced haemoglobin. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nitrogen and Redox Metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Eva Albers; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; glutamate; protein expression; anaerobic physiology; nitrogen metabolism; redox; serine;

    Abstract : Anaerobic conversion of glucose to ethanol by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been studied. Glycerol is formed as a by-product in order to maintain the overall redox balance. READ MORE

  5. 5. Life after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation : long-term survival and quality of life

    Author : Viktor von Bahr; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: The use of Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has steadily increased in the last decades and has evolved in several ways. From originally being a means to support the neonatal patient with respiratory or circulatory failure for days to weeks, ECMO is now mainly used in paediatric and adult patients. READ MORE
