  1. 1. On the epidemiology, clinical presentation and transmission of respiratory viral infections

    Author : Nicklas Sundell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; respiratory viruses; measles; influenza; epidemiology; meteorological factors; real-time PCR; viral transmission; lower respiratory tract infection;

    Abstract : Respiratory viral infections encompass a large heterogenous group of pathogens that constitute a major burden of disease globally. The various routes of transmission including airborne spread make them difficult to control. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the Diagnosis and Management of Viral Respiratory Infections

    Author : Robin Brittain-Long; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory virus; Respiratory tract infection; Real-time PCR; Multiplex PCR; Antibiotic use;

    Abstract : Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs), are the most common infections in man, and represent a major global health burden. Viruses, most often causing a mild and self-limiting disease, yet with substantial morbidity and high costs for society, mainly cause upper respiratory tract infections. READ MORE

  3. 3. Acute respiratory infections among children in the Democratic Republic of Congo - nasopharyngeal pathogens, antibiotic resistance and vaccination

    Abstract : This thesis describes the epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci) and other respiratory pathogens after introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and further portrays antibiotic use in Tanzanian children. Pneumococci are a leading cause of pneumonia in children. READ MORE

  5. 5. Aspects of infection and leukemia in Rwanda

    Abstract : A first part of this thesis addressed the potential impact of variants of genes encoding interferon-λ4, which is a cytokine that participates in protection against pathogens at epithelial surfaces, for the resolution of upper respiratory tract infections in Rwandan children. In a study of 480 subjects (≤5 years old), where follow-up samples were available from 161 subjects, it was observed that IFNL4 genotypes were associated with clearance of RNA viruses from upper airways.
