    Keywords : diabetic retinopathy; clinically significant macular edema; miosis; mydriasis; neuropathy; phenylephrine; pilocarpine; visual acuity; laser flare intensity; cataract surgery; phacoemulsification; blood-aqueous barrier; postoperative inflammation; posterior capsule opacification; intraocular lens; Scheimflug camera;

    Abstract : The aim was to evaluate phacoemulsification cataract extraction with small incision and implantation of heparin-coated intraocular lens (IOL) in the capsular bag in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The aqueous flare intensity, which reflects the protein concentration in the aqueous humor, was used to evaluate blood-aqueous function in patients with DM type I and type II. READ MORE

  3. 43. Long-term glycaemic control and complications in Type 1 diabetes

    Author : Carin E. Kullberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The impact of long-term glycaemic control, assessed by HbA1c measurements for five years or more, on diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and impaired vibration perception threshold was investigated in adult patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes was defined as onset of diabetes before the age of 31, with insulin therapy introduced within 6 months from onset, and with no other known cause of insulin deficiency. READ MORE

Under these pathological conditions, tissue hypoxia often acts as a trigger to switch on angiogenesis. READ MORE

  5. 45. Glycaemic Control and Complications in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Mats Bojestig; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : There have been substantial changes in the management of diabetes since the 1960' s.We studied all 213 patients in our catchment area in whom Type I diabetes was diagnosed before the age of 15 years between 1961 and 1980, 92% were followed from the onset of diabetes to 1991 or to the time of deathThe cumulative incidence of diabetic nephropathy has decreased substantially in recent decades from 30% to 9% after 25 year's diabetes duration, probably as a result of improved glycaemic control.
